gentleman who brushes your coat and
breathes a soft hope in your left ear that
the tip will be large, has nearly passed
on transcontinental lines in the opinion
of many "local railroad men. Recentjy
it was neml-offlolally announced that the
Union Pacific would soon dispense with
Its negro porters and employ In their
places white men at an average Increase
of $12.60 a -month In salary, tips to, be
rigorously frowned on.
In the east the annoying train huck
ster of popcorn and yellow cased liter
ature has been relegated by the Burling
ton "to" his proper place, the depot plat
form, and his absence in the crowded
trains has brought many blessings, on

Another bounces Into the office and
relates that after expending $2.80 on his
dinner orders he got less and received
much scantier attention than his neigh
bor who started In by giving the waiter
half a dollar and only ordered 75 cents'
worth of edibles; e
Then a claim agent arrives and tells
how h-aw -a- hungry - crowd neglected
for half an hour while one man lingej-ed
over his dessert because the waiter was
tipped not to let the crowd In to annoy
the little man.

Austin, Tex,; Jan. I. -Beginning to
day, Texas virtually takes rank among
the prohibition states of the Union.
The anti-saloon movement was begun
several years ago, but It was not until
the last summer that its success became
assured. In three months more than
200 counties "went dry" as a result of
a rote of the people. The saloon ele
ment put up a bitter fight, both at the
polls and In the courts, but It was
worsted everywhere with the result 'that
the Lone Star state begins the new year
as a teetotaler,

The following statement of latest
monthly earnings of roads having either
a terminus in .Portland or else sustain
ing Jocal offices In the city will show
perhaps more nearly than any other set
of figures just; the financial condition
of the West, and also the country at
large. The figures are corrected De
cember 24 and the latest obtainable.' '
1 The Southern Pacific, earned during
September $8,218,028, an increase of
$211,013; net earnings were $2,922,607,
a decrease :of $121,629.' For October the
Southern , Pacific .earned $8,913,845, in
crease $634634; net earnings for month,
$3,410,019, Increase $437,306.
t The Canadian Pacific during October
earned $4,488,263; increase $360,861; net,
$1,654,027. increase $37329. The Canadian-
Pacifle-made'-good andindeed
unusual "showing for the four months
ending October 81, it earning $16,489,763,
an increase of $1,919,075; its net earn
ings were $5,608,922, which was an in
crease over the preceding four months

during October earned $4,838,637'; an
increase of $23,836; net, $2,039,945, an

The Illinois-Central also showed good
gains during October and the four
months ending October 81. During the

increase of $312,625; : net .earnings,
$1,235,260; decrease, $123,041. For the
four" months the road earned $16,154,-
601. an increase of 31.626,098;- net,
$3,89.935; Increase. $14,363.
The Denver & Rio Grande earned dur
ing October ? $1,629,687. a decrease of
$59,488;- net. $637,726; decrease, $61,802.
Of them all the Missouri Pacific heads
the list with net earnings. During Sep
tember the road , earned $3,971,047; in
crease, ; $747,030; net, $1,321,922; in
crease; $201,676, For the period begin
ning January 1 and ending September
30 . the road earned $31,716,010, an In
crease Of $4,889,415; net, $10,173,219; in
crease, $1,814,573. . ;
The Rock Island during September
earned $4,390,597; increase, $363,072; net
earnings. $1,375,140; decrease, $283,872.
For the year ending June 36 the road
earned $44,376,620; net, $16,317,455.
The "heaviest increase in the realm
of railroad finances is that shown by
the Reading Railroad & Coal company,
The railroad company earned during Sep
tember $2,923,121; Increase. $982.677,-net
$1,107,820; increase. $729,939. the coal
and iron company for the month made a
net earning of $122,277; an increase of
$376,463 since the preceding month
showed a big- decrease.- The joint earn
ings of the two industries for the period
between JulyT and. September 30 were
very large, the net earning being $4,633,-
217, a net increase of $4,009,786, Prob
ably seldom in the history of finance has
a net earning meant so large a net In
crease as has It In the case of . these
allied corporations, the chief reason for
the big increase being that earlier the
coal and Iron corporation was running
behind steadily.

Pittsburg, Pa., Jan. 1. The tent or
thousands of employes of the United
States Steel corporation working in tjie
concern's mills and offices In -Pennsylvania,
New York, Ohio, Illinois, Wiscon
sin and other states, doubtless have lit
tle inclination for celebrating the New
Year. Over 160,000 men, or about. 40
per cent of all the employes of the cor
poration, go to work. today at a lef
wage than they have been receiving
heretofore. The remaining 10 per cent
represent the employes belonging to the
Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel
and Tin Workers. The existing agree
ment between the corporation and the
association prevents the wages of these
men being reduced before the agree
ment expires next July. The reduction
ranges from 6 to 30 per cent, and will
mean a saving of more than $1,000,000
yearly to the corporation.

Despite the fact that this week was
supposed to be one of usual dullness
for the holiday season, the realty trans
actions during the first four days 'Show

The reason for this Is very plain. Real
estate is looking up. A large portion
of the transactions made during the
ween were small homes, ranging from
$1,000 to $1,500 .each, , There is a very
large call for this class of property at
present, and real: estate ' dealers say
they can sell twice as much as they did

Demand for Small Homes. -
''There is an unusual demand for
small homes,," say Rountree ft Diamond,
"and we have no doubt that the sales
which were made during the week could
be doubled If we had a larger - list of
properties..- we see that the committee
having charge of the accommodations
for the live stock delegates is experienc
ing considerable difficulty in getting the
required number ; of , rooms. The fact
that Portland needs more hotels la be
coming more apparent as the days go
by. Everybody says so, but It seems
there Is not sufficient capital in the city
to construct the proper kind Of placea.

visiting librarians. Andrew . Carnegie
contributed $50,000 toward the construc
tion of the library, which Is one of the
finest and best equipped buildings of the
