. Poultry Oees Upward, -
A scarcity in the supply of poultry
of all kinds caused the market to as
sume a much stronger tone this morn
ing and ,.tbv prices, in some cases, are
quoted at least 1-cent a pound higher.
The arrival of poultry today, as is usual
on Monday, was small, but there was a
good demand. From advices 'received
from up the country the receipts will
show up better during the week, but a
fairly steady market at good quotations
Is looked for by the various dealers.
Eggs Continus Weak.
The extreme weakness in the egg mar
ket continues, but there were no ejianges
In the price today. Receipts still show
up too large for the demand. ', Just now
there are enough Oregon eggs arriving
to suit all the calls from the trade
and eastern stocks are a drug on the
market. This, may change, however, for
a continuance ' of the present cool
weather .will .havean effect of curtail
ing receipts and cause the price to show
more steadiness. Oregon eggs today are
selling on Front Btreet at 80 cents a
dozen, but once in a while a select
case comes In and Is sold at a slight
advance over the market.
Bsttsr Tons In Bntt
There was a much better tone In .the
butter market today, but nochanges ap
pear in quotations. . The receipts are
still a Arifle too large, but the market
cleans up slightly better than It did last
week. The receipts of country store and
dairy butter are too .Jieavy for the de
mand on account, of the lowness of the
quotations on renovated, which stocks
are preferred. v
Potatoes and Onions Snll.
I. Just -. what changes the 'potato and
Onion market will show after the first of
the year Is hard to predict at this time,
but the -various buyers on the street
look for a much steadier market with
some changes for the better In prices.
At the moment there is absolutely noth
ing doing in either potatoes or onions.
Farmers are . generally freer offerers
of stocks, but the buyers are filled up
and want to unload before going in
deeper. , Good, extra fancy potatoes are
wanted at fair quotations, but beyond
this there is nothing doing in outside
markets. Locally the demand for po
tatoes is good, but this f market itself
takes so little stocks to overload it that
It does not cut much of a figure.
. Cases Basins Bad.
It Is exceedingly dull In the cheese!
markets stocks being In an overabund
ance and demand Is quiet. What little
call -there is now In the cheese market
seems to b for November stock and
other months' are selling several cents
off the market
. . Bo Order for Prunes.
Local prune men hardly know what to
say In regard to the prune situation.'
All the warehouses In this territory are
filled to overflowing and the outside
movement is so small that it can hardly
be noticed.- Offers ' to sell have been
made by the local men at various prices
ranging from a l4ce'nt to a 2-cent
base, but' so far very few of them have
been accepted. California still has a
large amount of prunes remaining un
sold snd this helps to keep the market
ror uregon s down.
, Wholesaler Taking Mock.
There are very few changes at present
in the wholesale grocery market. The
merchants and -their entire forces sre
very busy, however, making preparations
for a general stock-taking. Operations
in this line will begin tomorrow.
" Opinion en tn BCarkst.
W. H. prver It seems to me as If,
the potato and onion markets will pick
up after the holidays are' over.
Page & Sons Not much doing today;
the trade wants Oregon eggs and poul
try the latter at higher prices; other
markets are very well supplied.
Chatterton & Co. Local demand for
potatoes Is good; chickens scarcer and
prices look better; creamery butter is a
very slow sale just now,.
O. 8. Smith company usual after-
Christmas uletude 'is now ruling the
markets.
Everdlng eV. Farrell Business quiet;
fairly good demand for butter and poul
try, but none for eggs.
W. B. Olafke company Little better
feeling in the creamery butter market,
but prices sre unchanged; prunes are not
moving at all.
Turneri&Co.-AU kinds of poultry
are selling on arrival at quotations; we
expect a good market this week; Oregon
eggs steady; store butter weak;
Bell & Co.-r-Business today was of the
usual after-Christmas variety. . '
L. Jaggar Potatoes and onions, quiet.
W. S. Swank No new developments in
either potatoes or onions.
Toft, nine & Co. Excellent demand
for poultry . with good prices ruling;
everything was cleaned up last Saturday
at ususl prices.

"Wheat was moderately active.
Broomhall cabled that. the firm tone of
Liverpool. is largely due to fears of war,
and the occasional covering of .shorts in
this market helped. Some , observers
were selling wheat on sharp rallies and
replacing it on breaks.: Armour is doing
likewise. - Direct Argentine advices rej
port further 'rains. Exporters early re
ported, a fair inquiry on the other side,
but business was Interfered with by the
advices . here. Primary receipts wers
liberal. War news at the moment is by
all odds the, most Important factor. So
long as this remains true wheat should
probaWy do better and be bought. .. In
crease In the visible supply was largely
in excess, of last year. ,
Cora Wa Higher. ,
The corn market was higher. It par
took of the strength in wheat, but had
the same abnence of selling pressure,
to which we have been referring of lato,
was evident. The movement f corn
to first hands Is small. There is quite
a little poor corn coming here, which
is going at low prices. The shipping
situation is Interfered with still by ths
lack of . cars, but the indications sre
that the demand for good corn would be
encouraging if the property could b
moved. Speculative operations are not
large, but the tone of the market con
tinues strong and the tendency seems an
advancing one, Until the movement In-:
creases, would not get In front of it.
Oat rim and Higlier.
The' oats market is firm and nearly
cent higher. There was a sharp ad
vance during the early part of the day,
due largely to the covering of shorts.
This was partly lost at the close. It
Is not an active market. Cash ' oats
are selling at around a discount, al
though the movement is small and the
visible supply showed but a small
change. The situation is not a weak
one,' but simply a question whether the
pricediscounts It. The premium on
May oats is rather a liberal bonus to
the short seller.
Provisions a Shad Higher.
The provision market was again Arm
and a shade higher. Receipts of hoga
were considerably . below expectations,
and prices -at the yards - were up. The
quality, too, is considerably below that
of the corresponding periods of -last
year. The distributive demand was
maintained and" the whole situation
seems legitimate and healthy. It has
had a sharp advance ' from the low
point, and on any fair break would
continue to buy provisions.

Bache & Co.. New York: The trac
tions were stronar. but showed consider
able realizing, advantage being taken to
sell on tne strong spots snown else
where. While all active railroad issues
were notably strong, the advances were
not so marked as among the industrials
and specialties. The close was strong,
showing every Indication of some fur
ther advance.

"Jim Jeffries has so firm a hold on thai
title of champion pugilist of the world
that he does not seem in the slightest
danger of losing It by meeting a supe

noted expert of pugilism, in the Chicago

"A physical exaniinatlon taken by the
bollermaker a few days ago gives a hint
tnat ins greatest enemy is hi bulk.
To say that Jeffries will last five years
or ten year is mere - speculation. So
far as can be seen now ha may be cham
pion 20 years or he may r,un up against
something within a year.. It is impos
sible to figure chances in the gams ; of

"Jeffries is shown by examination to
be a 'remarkable specimen of physical
perfection, which fully refutes the claim
that a fast life has been undermining
him. The fact that his girth is less than
It was three years ago indicates that hU
habits are not so bad as we have been
sometimes led to believe. - They are cer
tainly more exemplary than those of
John L. Sullivan, and John L. kept th
championship , longer than ary . other
pugilist of modern times has held it
"It cannot be denied, however, that
the bollermaker has a hard fight -on his
hands in keeping his weight down to a
point where he can handle it. ' He 'was
examined three years ago and'' weighed
223 pounds when in 'normal condition
that is, when, he was not training zor a
fight. A few day ago he tipped the
beam at 247 pounds. . Being of massive
frame he naturally carries a great dfeal
of weight, and possessing extraordinary
strength he can move his bulk about
without getting tired. , There Is nothing
on record to show that he ever became
very weary In hard fight" 1
