THE OIIEG02T .DAILY' JOUBNAL. PORTLAND, "WEDNESDAY ETEKING, DECEMBER 23, 1S0S. U. P. TRAINS TO mil Ml TRACKS XT IS BELIEVED TE1T HEW TKAT TXO AOBEEMSVT WZXXf EESXXX.T XN GREAT BEJTETXT TO THIS CXTT WHEAT CBOM TO COME TO rOXTX.AHX. '- What -will the Northern PacMo receive from the Harrlman interests for allowing Union Pacific trains to enter Seattle over their lines? This Is' question local railroad men ' are trying , to , solve and various answers hate been given : New York dispatches have -announced that the b Union Pacific would operate ever Northern Facmcr tracks Into Seat tle, but have failed to show what bene fit the Northern Paciflc Auld get in re turn lor this (considerable peace , oftee ing. - '- r r ; r . ' . Local agents of the Northern Paclflo have received no definite- Word oj what wilt be the concessions" granted their line by the Harrlman Interests, but they are one in saying thfttjhe most proba ble benefit will be to allow ...Northern Paciflc trains entrance Into Portland over; the O. R. & N. tracka sonivWal lula junction. ' , i ,-' That is the only thing" I. see that our road can want' said, one of, the load ing Northecp Paciflc .trafflo men ot the city today, '"'and that la probably wht will occur. VThls matter has been ru mored ; for" two "or' three months and our people generally have believed that such an arrangement would , be made. New York advices 'today confirm part if our theory and the rest will soon fol low. 1n mv eoinlon. ' r -. ? t t "This will . benefit Portland Immeas urably since most of the wheat from the greatest grain district In the coun try Is now hauled from Eastern Wash ington over the Cascade mountains to Tacoma and Seattle. The climb r from Ellensburg to" Tacoma Is something fierce and It would be easier to send all . the traffic originating In Eastern Washington via Wallula end - Portland to the sound, than to haul it by the present route. But any time those wheat trains pass through , Portland without unloading and shipping from here to the Orient the city will be asleep, and I look for a big boom in shipping busi ness here whenever- tiie Northern Pa cific begins operation from ' Wallula Junction, and that will; be almost per tain to come whenever' the Union Pa clflo runs over our line to Seattle." " SIDEWALK WORK MUST BE UNIFORM The city engineer has been working on a system of reaching an equality In the method and character of street and sidewalk Improvements, and the changes will be incorporated .into the statutes 1 as amendments to the present existing ordinances. The necessary alterations have been carefully figured out and will Insure a sameness which has heretofore been lacking. -v.- When the changes are effected the quality thickness and other character istics of all street or cement walk work must be up to exact standards. In the past this has been left to a great extent to .the individual testes or desires of the contractors. Naturally it has re sulted in some difference Ha 'the work. for one contractor would think one stylo the best, 'while another would think .exactly different. . Of course, in all municipal- contracts, the plans and specifications have covered the kind and quality of material for certain Jobs, but there has been too much leeway allowed the contractors In the opinion of the "officials. They felt it would be best for the city and best for everybody to make the ordinances so uniform and certain that there could be no misunderstand ings hereafter. 1 A copy of these changes Is now being drafted and will be presented for adop tion soon. ., . - , ' TEETOTALER TAKEN FOR DRUNKEN MAN . losraal Special Serrkt. -- ' Kalama. Wash.. Dee; 22. A short time . ago one of Kalam's cltisena who, by the way. Is a strict temperance man, but blessed with a very jolly and boisterous manner, was wending his way through the streets of Castle Rock, en route for his hotel. Attracted by his loud voice and rollicking laugh, Marshal Price ar rested' him for drunkenness. Our worthy citizen at once proceeded to con vince the marshal, by the "laying on of hands, that he was entirely sober. This he did In a most scientific manner. Some little disturbance was created over the matter which brought forth the follow ing letter from our citlsen . to the county paper: "Ed ltor it KalamsT-E-BulletlnSlrr-As your paper and the Oregonlan have al ready given considerable notoriety to the little encounter I had with Marshsl Price of Castle Rock, please allow me to publicly express my opinion of the "perllce force" of our sister city. It seems to me-that when the councllmen of Castle Rock appointed as marshal a man who- can't tell a good-natured pro hibitionist from a disorderly drunk. they placed a dad-burned low Price on the office; for there are 'possums In Ar kansaw that far outrank him intellec tually. It Is a menace to the .safety of the women and children of Castle Rock for that man to be armed with the po liceman's club, and allowed to run at large on the streets. He evidently was conceived in somebody's bark yard In DON'T Blame any one but yourself fori not having attended my AUCTION SAL.ES OF HIOH GRADE JEWELRY to mapy Thursday is the last chance to get a Christmas present cheap in fact, whatever 'you'll pay. ; AUCTION AT a AND 7 P. Mrs. S. C. Cook ot Kalama has in her possession the original- of the following bit of verse, which was t found in the socket a dead tramp .'more than SO years ago. The tramp was discovered frozen to death in a vacant house near St. Charles, Mo. : The, house was owned by Mrs. Darnell," grandmother of Mrs. Cook and it had been unoccupied for about a year. "The tramp had evidently wandered in for protection from the storm and built a fire in the fireplace, but not having a sufficient supply of wood, his fire died down and he was froxen. He was found crouching In the ashes of the hearth: I'm a broken down man without credit ... or casn, . My clothes are all Uttered and torn; Not a friertd have I got In this wide, dreary world, r ,: I wish I had never been born. . They tell us go work for our living And not through this wide worm to ' tratrib. And when 'we rbR for. employment. They say there's no work for a tramp. I have tramped this wide world over, Sleeping "out on the ground, cold and damri, Stared in the face by starvation, O pity the fate or a tramp: The other, day on the B. & C'road, An old man tired and footsore. - Saw an empty box car standing stUl on the track. .-.- .. He got In and closed up the door. He bad rode but three miles in the empty box car. When the brakeman came round with his lamp. He was thrown from his car and killed by the mail, ,t "' Because he was only a tramp. Kind friends you . .must always remem- . Among the Mormons .everywhere, t there were held today celebrations which might be com- pared to the Christmas celebration of Christendom. . This Is Joseph Smith's birthday anniversary; and the observ ance of it and of - Brigham Young's birthday are official holidays of the Mor mon church. In the evening- interesting exercises are held at all of the meeting houses of the faith, differing little from the customary Christmas celebrations. The program consists of.musio and of discourses on Joseph Smith, his life and works. The story is told of his birth in 1805 in a lowly farmhouse among the mountains of Vermont, his alleged discovery of the sacred plates and his subsequent, "revelations." the story of his subsequent -, career, in which he founded the Mormon religion, and hii tragic death in Illinois. At the taber nacle today all-day exercises were held, with addresses by a number of promi nent , speakers, " The . musical service, which was on an elaborate scale, was chief feature of the program. ,. , A OUABAHTEEX CTTBS VOB XTLES.
