Vale, Or., Nov. 10. At midnight Sat
urday night in Weatfall. 10 miles west
of this city. In an altercation concern
ing a horse, John Howard, In attempting
to kill Al Lone;, ahot Elmer Dorey, who
was acting the part of peacemaker,
twice through the stomach and once
through the leg with a 2I-callber Win-
cheater rifle. Howard, after the shoot
ing, escaped to the hills. The wounded
man la not expected to survive hi In
juries.. Sheriff J. E. Lawrence, who is
confined to his bom with rheumatism,
haa dlapatched Deputy Sheriff Lockett
to the scene of the shooting.
A good time In the gay north end cost
C. L. Eastman, a plasterer from Colfax.
Wash., ISO and his handsome gold watch
Friday night. He started in to see the
sights and wound up In a saloon, where
be bought wine at 15 a bottle. One of
the hangers-on in the resort accompanied
him to hla room. The next morning hla
watch and 130 were gone. He, reportea
the matter to the police.
Damaged Water,
During Saturday night's storm the
drain plpea of the Strowbrldge building,
on Third and Yamhill street, got
stopped up and the water came down in
torrents through the skylight, doing
considerable damage to the atock of dry
goods in the White Corner.

Wednesdays and Fridays, at 7 a. m.

cemetery haa sent out appeals for aid
to those who own lots in the cemetery.
The association, since the erection of the
soldiers' monument In the cemetery, has
felt that some additional feature and
decoration should be added to the place,
and hope to secure sufficient funds to
purchase benches and seata for visitors.
