"Bay, Bill, that bull can't make you
go: It's only 20 minutes to train time."
"If you don't want to get run In you
had better move."
"Ah. come on, fellers! That btf tlft
haa ther drop."
Thin conversation, with variations and
numerous additional epltheta, occurred
yesterday morning- at the union depot
when the officer on the railroad beat
warned off about 80 cabmen and hotel
runners. "We have to show we are on deck,"
said the officer, "or those fellows will
get the Idea Into their heads that they
own the depot, and travelers i will have
no peace from their rudeness. There Is
an unwritten law among the officersthat
cabmen shall not get here until 20. min
utes before the arrival of trains, but
some of them come down at 7 In the
morning and hang on until 9 o'clock if
they are not warned off."
At the time the officer -decided to take
action and impress upon the runners
that they had not yet received a title
deed to the depot and adjoining territory
there waa a line of at least 30 hacks
and cabs before the station. One by
one these slowly moved off, and 41 a
single cabby forgot to tell wbat he
thought of the officer, the omission waa
not noticed In the general tirade, uev
era! Ingenious 'busmen tried to convince
the officer that his watch was slow, that
the depot clock had stopped and that
the train from Bpokane waa due in about
four minutes, but they failed and had
to. Join the mournful procession. Two
cabbies succeeded lnTunnlng the block
ade, and they did so by discreetly lying
low until the time for the others to re
turn had arrived. The officer hunted
eagerly for theae two, but failed to find
them until it -was too late.
