KNAPP IS LAID TO REST The funeral of Charles S. Knapp was held at the home of his father, D. K. Knapp, 738 East Burnslde street, yester dav afternoon, a large number of friends paying their last tribute to the younfr man's memory. Charles 8. Knapp died suddenly at a San Francisco hospital last Wednesday. Mr. Knapp was Just entering on his life work, having almost completed his technical training as a machinist and was Soon to marry Miss Willie Over hulser of 8an Francisco. A home had been prepared for the young people in Kenilworth. and almost in the midst of the wedding preparations came the death of Mr. Knapp. The body was brougnt tr foniana Saturday by Q. K. Eggleston. who deserted his wife for a woman of bad character, was sentenced to two years in the peniten tiary in the state circuit sourt Sat urday, and in passing sentence . Judge Frazer said that he was very sorry the statute did not allow him to make ths sentence five years. Eggleston formerly lived In Chicago, and came to Portland In search of work about a year ago. His wife and little girl remained. in the East with the un derstandlng that they were to join Eg gleston as soon as he should secure em ployment. After being 1n Portland a few weeks, Eggleston sent for his family, but be fore they arrived, f ortnad an acquaint ance with anothef woman. At the depot he met' his wife and told her that she might as well go back that bo had found a woman much more to bis taste. While she was doing house work for. a living, the one who had supplanted her was taking Instruction on the piano. Eggleston,'s ball was fixed st 11.600, in default of which he was taken to the county jaiL The cas will be taken to j the supreme court. While walking along Second street, be tween Oak and Pine, early yesterday morning, Thomas J. Dalton, a cigar maker, dropped dead. He was on his way home after visiting with friends, and when a short distance from the police sta tion he (ell to the sidewalk and lay until an officer found him. He was then dead, the cause apparently having been heart disease. Coroner Flnley found no marks of violence on the body and will hold no Inquest. A more thorough examination will be ma.de at the morgue today, where the body was taken.
