' ' The Methodist Episcopal church la growing faster 1n mission fields than st homo and oo great has become the foreign work that at the. general tnli slonary meeting to be held at Omaha November 10, over 11,400,000 will ap propriated for the spread of Christianity In pagan landa. f Bishop Earle Cranston, one of the 1 dignitaries, ol the Methodist Kplscopal church, with his official residence In Portland, is In the city at the present time, but will start East In about three weeks in order to be In attendance at the next meeting of the bishops' con ference at Bock Island. 111.. October 2. The bishop returned to Portland last Saturday . after two months' work pre siding at conferences In Wyoming. I tah, Colorado.. Arizona, California and the Japanese mission and German churches In California, At the coming meeting of the bishops IS are expected to be In attendance. There are at present 18, but three are In foreign service, Bishop Vincent. In Europe; Bishop Moors, In Eastern Asia, and Bishop Warren, In Southern Asia. Two have died since the last general conference in 1900. "Our largest conferences cannot ac commodate the young ministers,". said the bishop this morning, "and as a mat ter of raet the Methodists are supply ing some of the other churches with minister. Methodism Is about 1. 000.000 strong. In India we have 110,000 con verts and about 40,000 In Eastern Asia, with many thousands more ready to en ter our ranks Just as-sooa as ws can ' supply them with Instructors and preachers. The heroism shown by the Chinese Christians during the Boxer uprising has awakened new interest in missionary work and has shown the general publlo that results are being obtained. Hundreds of converts lost their lives rather than deny Christ and I believe that no people on earth have . ever shown any more heroism than that . displayed by the Chinese Christiana." ' - The bishop makes light of the recent 'furor raised regarding alleged mlsman - agement of the San Francisco repository . -of the Methodist Book Concern. "The repositories are not Intended for 'money makers," he said, "but for the ' convenience of the conferences. The new repositories nearly always lose 'money at first. The Chicago house and ,the one at St. Louts are paying, but they have been long established and are In the heart of the strongest Methodist regions In the country. The trouble at Ban Francisco was that there was no . account taken of the depreciation of 'stock until' about four years ago and then, to the outside it looked like a big loss somewhere. Had an Inventory been .'taken every year this would not have . been noticed. I was aware or this, how ."ever, and so was the ' committee . In . charge." Of the general committee meetings te be held this fall the bishop named . , the following; Committee on church extension at Kansas City, November 4.. , Committee on Freedman's aid and ' Southern education at Lincoln, Neb., ,' November 8. , Missionary committee at Omaha, No ' vember 10. . The general conferences of the church .decide where the bishops shall reside, i but their work is confined to no one lo- cality and they preside where they ' themselves decide. Bishop Cranston, ..during his service on the stag of i bishops, has worked In nearly all parts of the world. The license committee of the city coun cil has set Its foot down on the busi ness, and the members of the council are exnwted to ratify this action at the regular session this afternoon. This solar-plezus Jab to an Industry which has long flourished In the city, it is proposed to effect by an amend ment to the license ordinance, whereby push-cart licenses are to be raised to a prohibitory figure. The amendment pre scribes a license of $50 a quarter, which makes It absolutely Impossible for tho street vendors of that class to do busi ness and make money. The dust and dirt from the street blown about settles on the candy and the city fathers think it dangerous for the people to get their germs In that way. Without taking Into consideration the quality of the candy which la sold from these carts, several physicians have declared that Its sal) Is Inimical to the health of the people. The ordinance covering the push-cart business Is amended to read that hawk ers and peddlers of candy, pop-corn, peanuts, chewing gum. Ice cream and oysters, shall pay a license as follows for hawking or peddling each of the above articles: When traveling on font with a basket or tray, $7.50 a quarter year. When traveling on foot with a push cart, $50 a quarter year. When traveling with one animal, f 60 a quarter year. That hawkers or peddlers of plants and cut flowers shall pay a license of S 1.60 a quarter year. The license ordinance covering ve hicles la also amended to read as fol lows: "Section 24. The owner or proprietor of every team used in hauling any wagon or cart used for the purpose of carrying earth taken from excavations or to be used In filling private or pub llo grounds from place to place shall pay a license of 15 a quarter. "The owner or proprietor of every house-cleaning or renovating machine used for the purpose of cleaning and renovating buildings, dry compressed air or other devices, shall pay a license of 110 per quarter. "The owner or proprietor of every traction engine used in hauling any wagon or cart used for the purpose of carrying earth taken from excavations or to be used In fll'lng private or public grounds from place to place within the city, Khali pay a license of $15 a quar ter. "Any violation of these provisions shall subject the offender to a fine of not less than 15 nor more than 20 upon ifcojivictlon in the police court" The 'ordinance covering garbage wag ons will also be amended to read that every vehicle 'used In transporting garbage shall be properly covered and that it shall not be on the streets of the city except between the hours of 9 p. m. and a a. m., in the months from April to October, inclusive, and from October to April between the hours of 7 p. m. and 9 a. m. Last Sat urday at noon Henry James, of the James Printing Company, was robbed of nearly $200 in gold. He thinks the robbery occurred while he was passing through a passageway leading from the Ladd & Tilton bank at Second and Stark streets. Mr. James cashed a check for $199.25. The gold was placed In his hip pocket and the silver in his overcoat. As he was passing through a door a man held open one of the swinging doors for him to pass through while a second pushed from behind. There was a crowd passing to and fro and by the time Mr. James reached his office he discovered that his pocket hsd been picked. He notified Chief Hunt and Captain Simmons wrs detailed to run the pickpockets to earth. It is atated that the gang of thieve that came t.o Portland was not molested on the promise of its members not to work here.
