' 1 ' Potrolt. ,; Th Oregon delegation to the mission try convention of the Christian church, headed by Rev. J. F. Ohormlejr of th First church of this city, left for De trott last evening. Ths other delegates are: Dean H. C. Sanderson of Eugene and Rev. Albyn Esson of this city. Ths delegation will endesvor to capture the 1806 convention for this city. They are backed by Invitations , from Governor Chamberlain. Mayor Williams, the cham ber of commerce, the board of trade, th Manufacturers' Association and the Lewis and Clark fair commission. All Christian churches of the Northwest are backing th Oregon delegation In the fight to bring the convention to this city. Th convention at Detroit will con tlnu. from October 18 to 33, and will conalat of not leas than 10,000 clerical and lay delegatea. Only two other re ligious organlaatlona in the United States hold larger conventions the Christian Endeavorers and the Epworth League. Tho convention will represent 1,100,000 members in tne united states and Canada. Ths Oregon delegates win represent 100 churches, with 10,000 members. Only on other church has mad greater .progress in the . United States during ths laat aecaae. It is expected that if the io con ventlon comes to Portland It will con sist of from t.000 to 6,000 accredited delegate besides thousanda of camp fol lowers, and will laat seven days. TWO ACCUSED OF STEALING A GRIP Upon the' request of the Portland po lice department George Hotchklas 'and Harry Dally have been arreated at The Dalles, accuaed of the theft of a ault case from the Union depot-laat Satur day night Word waa received from Sheriff Sexton at The Dallea this morn ing and during the day Policeman Car penter left for that city with a warrant charging th two men with the theft. Th suit case belong to W. J. Apple gate, who had gone to the depot to take a train for tho Eaat He set it down snd left It a few minutes. Upon his rs tarn 'ft waa gon. The suit cas con tained a quantity of clothing and Jew elry valued In all at about 3100. It la reported that two other grips were stolen from the depot Saturday night. When arrested Hotchklss and Dally had two suit cases, one, it is said, belonging to Mr. Applegate. REV. D. A. THOMPSON TO BE ORDAINED Rev. D. A, Thompaon will be ordained and installed as pastor of the Sell wood Preabyterlan church next Tueaday. Mr. Thompaon succeeds Rev. W. S. Wright. He la a graduate of Macalester college, with the degree of bachelor of art, took his master's degree at Princeton and his degree, as bachelor of divinity at Princeton theological seminary.
