in this city this morning the catch la
very likely to exceed all expectations.
Very few of the canners -on the lower

market Is heavily overburdened with
cheap grades. Chinooks and other first
class grades ore very scarce and few of
the canners have any supplies at all.
Prices are on the whole very firm with
every tendency for an early advance.

Chicago, Sept. 10. Logan A Bryan ad
viae:
The wheat market acted little heavy
and closed fractionally lower. The
weakness in corn was a factor and
primary receipts were a little in excess
of last year. The cables were steady
to firm. The weather in the United
Kingdom .la still reported as unfavor
able. The government report this after
noon la an uncertain quantity and its
expectation did not help the market
The exportbusiness for the day was
rather light The cash market was
steady and no lower. Duluth reports an
improved demand from Eastern millers
la that market The weather In the
Northwest la still threatening. There
was a small outside trade and pit
traders are bearish. We see no change
in general conditions. , .
Corn Xoat a Cent.
The corn market lost about a cent a
bushel. The expectation of a bearish
government report was the principal
information. There were heavy rains
again through a large portion of the
corn belt and while this did not deter
short selling nor prevent considerable
liquidation, still it Is not a bearish fac
tor. Country offerings are moderate and
generally speaking the local cash situa
tion la firm.- There is lust as -mu ii
variance In view In regard to the crop
position and the outlook aa - heretofore.
There Is a large active outstanding in
terest on both sides of the market
Oats Closed Unchanged.
The oats market closed abount un
changed. It is expected that the gov
ernment report will show a further re
duction in its estimate of the crop. The
CRSh position is the same as heretofore
and consist of moderate receipts and a
good demand, speculative operations
are unimportant at the moment
Provisions Again Higher.
The provision market was again
higher. - Prices --of live hogs -at the
yards is sharply up and there was
further covering of shorts. Holders
were more disposed to realise at the ad
vance. Local speculative feeling is on
the whole bullish but provisions have
had a sharp reaction from the bottom
and we would hardly like to buy them
except at some recessions.

The society, which Is one of the oldest

has heretofore held annual competitions
in the exhibition ot standard fruits, and

Commencing with the present year, a
new plan has been adopted for the con

is called the "ad interim" method of
competitions has. been adopted.. Hither
to it has been possible for competitors
to show only such varieties at the an

the meeting Is held. This has shut out

bridixed fruits, some of which have
made quick fortunes for nurserymen and

annual meetings, the long distance and
the climate of California not permitting
his work to be entered in competition.
The "ad interim" plan will permit any
investigator to have his work examined
by a committee of experts at the time
when his fruit is in the best condition
to show It. It will be examined hy a
committee; wnicn win report to the an

St Paul, Sept. 10. The new railroad
rates on coal and lumber, which were
-recently agreed upon after six years of
controversy between the railroads and
the state railroad commission, became
operative today. The new rates pro
vide for a reduction of from 8 to 15 per
cent on. coal and 12 to 16 per cent on
lumber. The railways have bitterly op
posed the reductions because of the fact
that timber rates- from the West and
coal rates both into and out of the state
will be serkwialy affected by the change.
it is expected the reductions in Minne
