NOTED HIGHBINDER,
POLICE DECLARE
Woo Sheok, Supposed to Be Ah
Gee, Held by Court Pending
the Arrival of Detective Gib
son from California,
Attempt to Secure His Release
Today by Writ of Habeas
Corpu$ rails Six Compan
ies Offers a Reward,
The return upon the petition for a
writ of habeas corpus In the case of
Woo Sheok. supposed to be Ah Oee, ac
cused In San Francisco of one of the
most daring attempta at assault and
robbery ever made In Chinatown of
that city, waa nied In the State Circuit
Court this morning by Deputy District
Attorney Spencer, and the hearing was
set for 9:30 o'clock tomorrow morning,
when Ietectlve Edward Olhson of Cali
fornia will arrive and claim the pris
oner. Oibson was in Sacramento last
night to aecure requisition papera which
they will present to Oov. Chamberlain
for his Indorsement at Salem some time
today. They will probably arrive in
Portland tonight and appear In court to
morow morning.
Ah Oee, alias Ieong Tee, Wong Chuck,
I-oule Sing, Too Shook and Tee Song
.Yea, the .police, -allege, la a noted high
binder in San Francisco. Woo Sheok
was arrested In Portland by Detective
Day last Wednesday upon the receipt
of circular Information from the chief
of police of the California metropolis.
The Crime Charged.
Ah Oee. In company with several
other highbinders, made a desperate at
tempt to rob the store of Wont Keo
Cheong, Wong Bee Chon and Wong Sick,
at 726 Dupont street, on May 10. The
proprietor resisted the robbers, and In
a battle with pistols and knives Wong
See waa shot twice by the robbers. Two
of the robbers, Wong Kee and Chee Gun
were captured by the Intended victims
and the former was sentenced to 20
years and the latter to 14 years In the
penitentiary. Three-others escaped, and
the Chinese six companies offered a re
ward of 100 for the capture of each
Two disappeared, but (See, as atated,
waa arrested here.
After presenting the return, Mr,
Spencer moved that no action be taken
by the court, excepting ao far as the
arrest and detention of the prisoner
was concerned. In his opinion the court
should not question the Identity of the
man until the arrival of the California
officers, with the requisition of their
Governor and the Indorsement there
upon of the Oovemor of Oregon.
Pipes A Tift, attorneys for Gee,
wished to have the question of Identity
passed upon at once. Mr. Pipes said he
could produce witnesses who would tes
tify that Woo Sheok had been In Ore
gon for the past two yeara, and that he
had always borne a good reputation.
The witnesses were six Chinamen, who
occupied seats In the courtroom.
Court Detains Xlm.
Judge Cleland ruled that the only
matter Immediately at lasue was the
question of detention. So far as that
was concerned, the court could do noth
ing until the arrival of the California
officers. It was not within the Jurisdic
tion of the court to Inquire Into the ac
tions of the Oovernors of the two states,
and there was no reason why It should
Inquire Into the Identity of the prisoner
before the requisition Is received. lie
therefore continued the case until :3C
o'clock tomorrow, when the officers will
be In the city.
After" i 'contimiarifl - hhd " fceeh
granted Sheok waa taken back to the
city Jail and was arraigned in the Mu
nicipal Court, and was allowed until to
morrow to plead.
EVERY DAY CASEY'S ,
"DAY IN COURT"
Rearrested on Day of Release,
Says, "I Don't Want to Be
In Jail All the Time."
James Casey waa In the Police Court
again today.
His appearance attracted no partlo
ular attention nor did It startle th
gossips. In fact the Police Court grind
Is very dry unless Casey is arraigned.
Usually Casey Is drver than the routine
or tne mm or justice and when Casey
satisfies his thirst he does It with
such a vengeance that he is hauled be
fore the bar on a charge of drunken
ness.
The old offender finished a JO-day
sentence at the city Jail yesterdsy and
early thla morning an officer found him
making his bed on the sidewalk, his
troubles soothed by alcohol.
"What's the matter with your' in
quired Judge Hogue sternly.
Well. Judge, I have Just finished my
lime, replied Caaey tn a penitent tone.
'I Just took one drink and the police
man arreated me. I don't want to be In
Jail all the time. I've worked hard
enough around here to be forgiven this
time.
"Well, I guess we'll keep you In here
until you learn to keep sober," said the'
court. 'Thirty days."
"Oh, Judge, maye It five, I'll be good"
walled Casey, but the bailiff led him
away to begin a month's work scrub
bing the station floors.
