had been circulated throughout the hall,
but which bore no union label imprint.

EUGENE. Aug. 13. News of the death
f a former well known and respected
resident of Lane oounty was received
Iherej yesterday In a letter from Butte,
-''Woj(ft Anthony White Laughlln, known
aa "Grandpa" Laughlin, died at Butte
Saturday morning, very suddenly, and
was burled the same afternoon by order
of hla nurse. Miss Lillian Hare, who was
his companion for several years pre
vious to death. He had deeded all hn
property to her and ahe gave out the In
formation that she was poor and had to
go to work as soon as possible after the
funeral. She Is worth at least 110.000
No physician was called and the entire
proceeding Is said to be looked upon
with suspicion. The authorities are
working on the case.

PARIS, Aug. 13. Nineteen more vie
tims of the tunnel disaster were burled
today at public expense. Very Imposing
was the ceremony. The Court Prefec
ture and the police were present, also
the families of the deceased and many
high officials of the city.
Premier Coombes delivered the fu
neral address.

explained by Charles G. Kllpatrlck. the
one-legged bicyclist' wfio performs
wheel feats which would be impossible
to the ordinary person in possession of
both his nether limbs. A car wheel
severed Kilpatrick's leg and a bicycle
wheel has brought him worldly wealth,
Without the first he feels confident he
would nev'er have secured the second.
What caused the loss of the missing
leg?" Was asked of Mr. Kllpatrlck last
night, Just 'before he mounted the flight
of steps down which he coasts at
breakneck speed at the Multnomah Club
grounds.
'Well. It won't take long to tell the
story," he responded, and the recital as
given Is reproduced here in Kilpatrick's
own words:
'I was born and raised in Danville,
111., and at an early age made up my
mind to 'get buay' at any occupation
which might enable me to lay the
foundation of what I hoped, and still
hope, some day to be a fortune.
' Worked in Mines,
'Coal mining is about the main busi
ness around Danville, and so into that
manner of work I turned my efforts.
Although but 12 years of age at that
time I was soon earning about $5 per
day, and more than three quarters of It
found Its way into the bank every payday.
"One night, when returning from the
coal mines, I undertook to 'hitch onto
a passing freight train, ana in jumping
on fell beneath the cars. The wheels
passed over my leg quicker than I can
tell It. and in due time the Injury soWv
receivea terminaiea in a sursitai narra
tion which left me with one limb with
which to navigate.
The thought of possibly becoming a
subject of charity caused me to do some
pretty heavy thinking, and I finally de
cided to invest enough of my savings
as was necessary to make me the owner
of a first-class bicycle.
I soon had tny wheel, and In the
course or time naa masterea enougn
tricks awheel to enable me to pose as
a sure-enougn rancy. riaer. engage
ment followed engagement, for cycling
then was all the rage, and soon my
stock of tricks was a great deal more
than I had ever dreamed of as among
the possibilities.
One day while filling an engagement
in Washington, D. C, the idea occurred
to me that for the first man who would
successfully ride down the Steps of the
caoltol building a crown of more than
ordinary value was awaiting, and I re
solved to make the effort
"One morning bright and early I went
again as had then become my regular
morning habit, and before I returned to
my hotel l had actually made the ride
down the capttol steps, more as a test
or a sample, than ought else.
"All th.ls time I kept mum about the
test ride which I had taken, at sunrise
the morning prior, and at -last , I pub
licly offered to wager as much money' as
anyone cared to bet that not only Would
I make the ride, but would also nego
tiate It successfully. . At ., once - tbe
sporty element came at me with tens.
twenties, fifties and hundreds, all of
which I covered, and to cut a long story
short, on time to the minute of that
memorable Saturday afternoon I ap
peared on the scene in Identically the
same costume as I wear now when I
make my ride down the stairs as you
see them here. The dash down the
stairs was made by me O. K., and
since then, in addition to the many
thousands of dollars won by me in
wagers that day, I guess I have made
as much as any one man In the world
out of his own call it what you will,
but I will go back to the original mis
hap when I lost my leg in Danville, 111.,
and term It 'fate.:
SERIOUS ACCIDENT
TO TOURIST PARTY

ASHLAND, Or., Aug. 13. A party of
tourists, prominent residents of Horn
brook, returning to Ashland from Crater
Lake and Pelican Bay, met with a serl
ous runaway accident on the Dead Indian
Hill, about nine miles from town, last
evening, but fortunately all escaped se
vere Injuries.
Mrs. H. Horn, Miss Grace Horn and
Mrs. George Rymal occupied a surrey,
which was driven by H. Horn. Ahead
was a buggy occupied by Mrs. Albles
Smith and Mrs. Thomas Jones. Without
warning the neckyoke of the surrey team
and the horses started to run.
Mr. Horn was unable to check them or
to control the vehicle with the brake.
Quickly they were upon the buggy,
crashing into It with great force.
Horses, vehicle and occupants were
thrown violently to the ground, some
of them going 30 yards down the moun
tain side from the road. The vehicles
were smashed Into pieces.. The escape
of the people from fatal Injuries was
miraculous. Mrs. Jones was painfully
hurt about the head and neck, and Mrs.
Smith suffered a sprained knee and ln-
urles to the limbs, but none are severe.
Other members. of the party were more
or less bruised and shaken up, but will
be about within a few. days.
COUNCILMAN IS ILL
B. P. Cardwell. councilman at large,
Is lying in a dangerous condition at hla
home. Fourth and Harrison streets with
a severe attack of heart trouble. Mr.
Cardwell went to the sea shore re
cently where he was seised with the
malady. He became so ill that he re
turned home Monday and he has since
been In a serious state. Today he was
reported slightly better but his recovery
is dojttbtful. , Mr. Cardwell Is a , well
known city official and ono of the
pioneers of Qe city.
