William Martin, a cripple with
wooden leg, was arrested this morning
upon, his arrival In Portland, He is ac
cuaed of larceny from the person, Frank
Foley, an arrival from Astoria, claim
ing that Martin robbed him of 4t on
the steamer Lurllne last tilght
Both men boarded the boat at Aa
torla, bound for this city. During the
night Foley fell asleep and he claims
Martin was sitting next to him. The
victim of the robbery woke up early
this morning just after the boat had
left Kalama, and he then discover J
his loss. Suspicion was directed toward
Martin, who had left the Lurllne at JCa

Reporting the matter to the police, a
watch was kept for the cripple, and Pa
trolman "Mdsely caught him Just after

shaved; had had a good breakfast

Peter Johnson, who says his home is

plaining; witness against Ida Bell and
May O'Brien, who were arrested by

the O'Brien woman with larceny.
The victim Is a man past middle ago.

but evidently lacking knowledge ln the
ways of the world. Last night he says
he met the women at a saloon at Sec
ond and Davis streets. They made

he purchafled aeveral bottles of beer.
Finally he fell asleep and when i he
awoke he says he was minus $20.
Upon making complaint, Johnson
claims the women told him. he ordered
four bottles of wine at $5 per, but he
asserts he has no recollection of any
such transaction. Upon making com
plaint to the officers, Johnson had tho
pleasure of seeing the women arrested.
They were arraigned in the Police
Court and . the cases were continued.

FIRE CAUSES LOSS
TO STORE AND FLAT
A loss of JflSO was caused by fire at
noon today in tne two-story rrame
building at Seventeenth and Irving
treets.
Brady's grocery occupies the ground
floor of the block, while the floor above
is divided Into flats. From some un
known cause a fierce blaze originated in
one of the kitchens and within a minute
the entire rear of the building was ln
flames. There was some delay In turn
ing in an alarm and when the first com
panies arrived the fire looked very
threatening.
The main damage is to the building,
which it will take $500 to repair. The
family occupying th,e flat sustained a
loss of $150 to their household goods,
while some damage . was done to the
grocery stock.
An unusual accident occurred to
Truck Company No. 3 when- it had
reached a point a block from the fire.

for the Methodist-Episcopal Church, has
returned f rom a tour of his field and is
at the home of his daughter-in-law.
Mrs. C. R. Thoburn, East Pine and East
Fourteenth streets. Bishop Thoburn will
occupy the pulpit of Centenary Metho
dist Church Sunday morning.
His tour through India, beginning in
March.' resulted ln 1,747 baptisms. The
aggregate number ln attendance at these

students at the university receive three
meals a day, or 21 meals a week, the
cost per meal is a fraction under 9 cents,

commons is wholesome, abundant and
well cooked, with variety enough to sat
isfy the taste of the students, The fig

The character of the food seryed at
the Multnomah County Jail is beet de
scribed by some of those who have been
enforced guests of the Sheriff and who
have had. to subsist upon the fare which
he provides.

J. Charles. Brown, who was held by
Sheriff Storey as a witness, was at the
jaiV about a. month, and was dismissed
several days ago. He Is now at the 8t
George Hotel, on First street In an In
terview with The Journal he said: "The
food furnished by Sheriff Storey Is not
fit to eat It Is unclean, poorly cooked
and the quality is the worst that was
ever 'purchased for a man.toat When
by Sheriff Storey, as it was by his pre
decessor. Attorneys state that It is
the duty of the Sheriff to turn over to
the county all fees which he collects for
the service of process received from
other counties. This has never been
done, either by Sheriff Storey or ex
Sheriff Frasler. How much the Sheriff
receives from this source is not known,
but uftder the law every dollar belongs
to the county.
Under the previous administration,
the Sheriff made considerable profits
out of the collection of fees -and mile
age ln transporting insane patients to
Salem, but this has now been stopped.
Whether or not there is any graft in
connection with the legal advertising
which is dispensed from the Sheriff Is a
question, but it Is of course, notorious
that litigants are compelled, to pay
prices far In excess of the usual rates.
In the palmy days of past adminis
trations, the Sheriff's office was reputed
to be worth to the Incumbent as much
as $20,000 a year. Happily for the
taxpayers, the value of the office has
declined, but even under present con
ditions the salary is probably the minor
part of Sheriff Storey's compensation. '
