The general opinion among the grow
ers of the Valley -who have the hop
situation of tha Coast In their graap
Is that if they hold on to their stock for
a few more weeks, they will be amply
rewarded, far their trouble and chance
taking bf receiving ft large Increase over
present qaotattona. Some of the larger
growers are predicting that the market
will go up to 16 cents and even higher
before the end of .the praaent season Is la
sight.
Ceutraota Xelng leads.
Borne contraots are being made at
quotations ranging from 11 cents to 16
cents a poand for the 1103s and there
now aeema a change In aentlment among
the growera aa far aa contracting Is con
cerned. In the fore part of the present
seaaon when prloea were high most of
those who had contracted their crop
around the 10-cent mark concluded that
It did not pay to tie them up at such a
figure so veny few future contracts were
made at that time. Now all Is changed,
and with the lower price quoted on the
1902a and a higher contract price on the
l03a, thoae whp failed to make.' con
tracts earlier In ' the season are now
availing themselves of the opportunity.
Btrong Eastern Market,
The situation In the Bast Is strong
with every tendency for higher quota
tions. European markets are the same
and quotations are advancing steadily.
Stocks throughout the world, which were
said during the early pa it of the .season
to be heavy, are almmered down until
now most of the large brewing concerns
are reported to be buying from hand to
mouth. With this condition In mind,
those who still have supplies of 1902s
on hand are determined to hold on a
while longer. ,
- Eggs ara Weaker.
Although the receipts of eggs were
not extensive today there whs plenty
of stock on hand to supply all demand
at current quotations and still have a
large amount of surplus eock which had
to be placed in Cold Htorage. Egg prices
sre considered far too high for this sea
son of the year and dealers In order to
keep their stocks ffUrly cleaned up were
.compelled to sell below yesterday's
figures. Weakness Is shown throughout
the entire market and further drops in
quotations are quite likely unless there
is a radical change in the amount of
receipts. Quotations today range from
16 Vi to 17 cents .
Strawberry Arrivals Short.
Strawberry arrivals from the South
were short today on ' account of the
scarcity of sufficient cars to move tne
crop. Tomorrow, however, the receipts
will amount to nearly three cars and
there will be plenty to supply all de
mand. Receipts of Oregon stock are
about the same and It Is not expected
that the crop of this state will be In
full swing for t least two weeks.
One car of green bananas- were sp
ceived from the South this morning.
The marketable fruit Is in heavy de
mand. Quotations still stand at 6
cents a pound,
. Asparagus From Walla Walla.
Asparagus Is beginning to arrive from
Walla Walla in large shipments and
with the larger receipts of stock from
California the market fs well supplied
Quotations today range from 1 to $1.25
a -box.
Poultry Demand Larger.
Poultry of all kinds Is In larger de
mand today and the top quotation 1
being received for all stock. Receipts
of mixed chickens are liberal, but hens
are slow arrivals. Some ducks are being
received, out the demand Is limited.
Tha Meat Situation.
Some fresh beef arrived on the street
today and found a fair demand at top
quotations.' Veal arrivals are large, but
demand Is slacker. There are plenty of
hoga on the street, but. quotations are)
weak on account of a smaller demand.
Packed meats, though unchanged In
limited. Lard Is quoted fair with quo

Heavy Demand for feed. '
Feed demand is heavy at the advance
of $1 a ton reported exclusively in The
Journal yesterday. Stocks are light and
the market shows . everytendenoy for
higher quotations. 1-
Wheat is in nominal demand, but the
local . market is not now showing the
weakness that was so prevalent for the
jiast few weeks. Flour demand about
equals the supply,

The various wholesale grocers of this
city report a large Increase during thi
month In country orders. City trade Is,
however, getting smaller with the con
tinuance of the labor difficulty, the
higher priced goods being especially In
small demand.

cerns of Eureka and will put on a line

was impracticable. steamers going to
Eureka were ' always able to' aecura
cargo' from here, .but it was Impossible
to aeeura a aorthbound cargo and cun

8. E. Johnson and Simpson Lumber Com
panies of Kureka are the direct causa
of this new line Vt steamers. Each con

The Danish steamer Folaratjernen left
down river this morning. She carries
one of the largest cargoes of wheat
taken from Portland tor some time. She
has 174.845 bushels of wheat, valued
at $144,846 and is bound for St. Vincent
for orders. : Thev-eargo is dispatched
by Balfour, Outline ft Co. The shipment

679 barrels of flour. The French bark
Surcouf arrived tha same day, 97 days
en route from Portland. She had 111.637

Ths first strawberries raised In this
locality during, the present season were
brought to th wholesale district yester
day afternoon by Miss M. Vs. Andrews,
who resides' in the vicinity of Mount
Tabor. The berries were of the Ma goon
