Mr. Brown has done I eat deal of work In the North, both j the KOVMuraent and. Individuals, and iiorerUsThky familiar with the condl that xlst there. In 1991 ha made ip feotn Hioniaa Xke to, Nome and .bv) Hound aad return, runninr the imlnary survey for the TransAlsMka f road, and Bom 188 to 1888 he was j he Skafirway, Stlkine and Atlln dis ss In advance of settlement. Last vtuk he mada the trip through the per River country, and In his opinion I section of Alaska, has the greatest re of any district yet known in the h. - . 1 talking yesterday of the country itary to Valdea, and the faith that i kike, Mr., Brown said: n my opinion VaMes is the real key hi ska, because it la the most north- port that la open the year round, he naturai distributing point for the r evnd Tanana Rivers, for Prince Lam's Sound at Landlocked Bay, for iucha and other Islands, and is be a the point from which the Amerl Vukon can be reached by the short i.nd easiest route. It has the further intagra over other Alaska towns that country tributary to it, it is reason-, to suppose, will have a great agri iral : development '. .'liile I believe that Valdea Is the coming town of the North, the last thing I want to do is to boom it at this time. It is sot a country for a stampede, for at the present time there is nothing in Valdes to support people who might go in. Tha development of the Copper River and the opening up of tha approaches to the Tanana can only be accomplished by capital and until that Is done it is worse than useless for men to rush in expecting to find a booming mining camp. "Nearly all of the new gold camps are in the neighborhood of 2)0 miles from the ; town of Valdea. The Chlstochina district, which comprises the Slate Creek and Chlsna camps, lies about 226 miles north of the town, over- a very heavy trail, and supplies are not to be had in the camp, for every man going in hauls only enough for himself The camps em ploy about 200 men at wages of Jl to ei.o yvr fluur ivr ivv uayn. "The copper camps in the Nlzina, Kot- aina and Chltna districts lie about 200 miles northeast of Valdes, and not enough work has been done to Justify employing any large number of men this year. 'Probably the greatest development of the immediate future will take place in the Tanana country, and the. route from Valdes into this dlstrlctpasses through more mineral country than any route to any other camp. The streams flowing into the Tanana from the south all carry mineral from their sources to within a few miles of the Tanana, The streams from the north are larger and slower. so that the deposits have been accumu lated near their sources rather than dis tributed along their lengths, as In the more swiftly flowing streams from the south. The strike on the Chena was the first because the mountains come doner, to the Tarmna-and the sources of the streams were .eaatest to reach. "Along the south bank of fhe Tanana there is a stretch of country 500 tnitee long that ltsoks promising, but has net been prospected. The trouble is it is a vast country and hard to gel into. "On Prince William's Soutid a lumber industry will be developed that will sup ply all the needs of tha country. "In the Interior the summer season is dry. Last year there was no rain for 35 days. Everywhere in the interior there rs plenty of feed for .stock below au elevation of 8,500 feet until Into Sep tember. A good comparison of tha cli mates of this part of Alaska and the Pa cific Northwest is found in the fact, that there the timber line is at an" elevation of 3,500 feet, while here It is at 4,500 feet. There is a difference In climate that corresponds to an elevation of 1,000 feet. "As soon as the country becomes open ed up I am convinced that it will devel op an agricultural value. "The principal industry will probably be stock raising and the land will be worked in small farms. During the summer feed can be raiBed In abundance 'and this will be stored green in airtight silos. The sea son is not" long enough to try to". cure hay, but there Is no feed better than that of the silo. AU kinds or roots grow very easily, and the largest and best potatoes I have ever seen have come rrom the Copper River Valley, On tho4farms.tbat will he developed vegetables will be cul tivated, and herds of about 200 head of cattle can be handled with ease. 'The work of the government in build ing the Trans-Alaska military trail has been a great help in opening Up the country. It has not only made travel easier, but by bridging the mountain torrmtfi nnd establishing ferries a large loss of life has been prevented. The trail from Valdes to Eagle City is 450 miles long, and crosses the Tanana 270 miles from Valdes." HOMES ON EASY PAYMENTS From 5 to 8 Rooms. -11,050 to $3,000. A. T.
