The continued scarcity of timothy hay
has caused some of the local feed mer
chant to send to California, for a sup
ply, and thin evening a large shipment of
the htock la expected from the South.

they ore holding for still higher prices.
The California stock fa sold under local
quotations. Other feed prices are utrong
with u tendency for an early advance
on 'all lines.
Teas to Advance.
There Is no doubt that the quotations
on Japan teas will show an advance with
the arrival of the new crop. This Is
caused by the ffcent change in Japan
ese methods of cultivation, the tea grow
ers are now paying more attention to
tbe proper cultivation of the plants. The
leaves uiiSer modern care are of much
superior quality and there will be a con
sequent reduction In tUu yield of the
poorer grades. The present crop is about
cleaned up. and the new stock will arrive
with the market comparatively bare:
Head Blca Is Scarce.
With adverse weather conditions in the
Southern rice-growing centers, the 1902
crop of New Orleans head Is not up to
Its usual standard in quality or quanti
ty. Higher prices are' anticipated In the
near future. Reports from the Orient
how a shortage la the crop In that lo

,There la a dearth of first class vege
tables on Front street today and the ar
rival of each shipment Is anxiously
awaited by both wholesaler and retail
er. Cabbage of the good grades are es
pecially slow in arriving, and higher
prices are the result. The growers of
Southern California have combined and
an organization known aa the California
Vegetable Growers' Association haa been
formed at Los Angeles. The steamer
Will arrive from San Franc hco this even
ing, and a fair-sized cargo of assorted
greens Is expected.
Tomatoes to Open Kay 1.
It is expected that the price of 1903
future canned 'tuinutoes will 0e opened
on May 1. Considerable stock has been
old in this territory at closed figures.
It Is expected that the opening figure
Will range from 76 to 77 V4 cents.

The receivers Say that many economies-
have been Introduced, and they will
be reflected In the company's earnings
for the year. The outlook for the cur
rent season 18 better than at any time
since the corporation was organized,
they believe.
The Pacific Packing & Navigation
Company will operate along broader lines
this year in spite of the many legal en
tanglements resulting from the receiv
ership. Every cannery, wltht the ex
ception of one, will be operated. They
are the Orea, Kenal, ITyak, Chignlk.
Kushagnk. Chllkoot, Dundas, Chatham,
Hunter's B&y, Taku and Yess Uay can
neries. ,'
The Puget" Sound canneries to be
operated by the . company are those at
Bhtlne and FatAaven, and possibly one
on Friday Harbor. This will be an addi
tion to the Sound properties.
The company owns ftnd will operate
about 75 vessels in connection with their
fish canntrig business and the general
freight and passenger traffic In South
eastern Alaska. Several large vessels
of the company have already sailed for
the North. "

The reorganization committee of the
Pacific Packing' & Navigation Company,
composed of George F, Crane, of Baring
Magoun & Co.; Stuyvesant Fish, presi
dent of the Illinois Central; George F.
Victor, John E. Borne, president of the
Colonial Trnst Co.; Charles Fletcher,
Charles Counselman and Neal Rantoul, j
are working diligently In an effort to
ilace the salmon combine on a profitable
basis.
They are hopeful that within a few
years the company will rank among the
safe Industrial consolidations of (he
