' Potato Am 'Weaker.
Potato' prions are waker In th lofal
markets In sympathy with the lower rul
ings In th California and other South

much weaker. Th supplies are bo
large that even the fancies are now
showing a tendency to weaken. It la
- not expected that they will go much
lower., Th saason is about two week
late in California and th old stock will
have time to clean up.

.Onions are showing a slight improve
ment today on account of a better de
mand from th south. Soma sales are
. being mad by local holders at 66 centa
for the fancy Btock, and JO 40 cents
for the ordinaries. The- markets would
have .shown a better tone, but for the
fact that arrivals during th past week
by team have been very liberal and more
and larger receipts are expected tomor
row. , , v . Srr Hot Plentiful,
' Egg receipts were more liberal today
on Front street and although th de
mand was not quit so brlak, prices re
mained at former quotations. It la ex-
. pected ' that receipts will show a vast
Improvement within the net week with
a consequent decline of quotations.
Th Heat Situation.
, Hog are In light receipt with demand
excellent at top quotations Veal and
mutton are drugs on the market on ac
count of th continuance of th arrival
of too much poor stock. Th cold stor
age depots are Oiled with surplus stocks
. of poor veal and mutton, and but for the
arrival of the bock sausage season and,
the us of a , large quantity of th
poorer material, prloes would now show
runner declines. Good stock is slow in
arriving and does not bring satisfactory
prices on account of being brought Into
competition with th poorer grades.

Steamer Alliance sailed from Astoria
for San Francisco this morning. While
on her way down the river Wednesday,
a slight breakdown occurred in the ma
chinery, which caused the aeiay.
The river steamers Regulator and
Dalles City have had white collars put
around their smokestacks. When the
White Collar line- was purchased by the
Regulator Company last February, the
collar trade mark was retained, but was
not put on The Dalles boats until .yes
terday.. The Asiatic liner Indrasamha arrived
yesterday at Victoria to land passengers.
She la due this evening or tomorrow
morning.
The owners of the steamer Norman
Isles have filed a claim of $76,000
against the owners of the Columbia, the
dismasted sailing ship towed into
Esquimau by the steamer. j
The Seefahrer will not finish loading
today, owing to the fact that no wheat
is on hand, for cargo. The bark will not
be ready to leave before the first of
next week.
Steamer South Portland is due to sail
from Sair Francisco tomorrow for this
port.
ance because of the expected removal of
the duty. The Important consumers In
Great Britain have been running along
from hand to mouth so as not to be left
with supplies that paid the duty. With
this matter settled there Is no longer any
need for uncertainty and probably a
large buying will begin. It Is always
easier to sell In a market where there
is no duty, no matter how small. It 1
possible that with this duty off,, th
Americans can share a little in the re
sults. It is to be expected that most
of the tax will at once come off th
English price. The shipping sales of
yesterday Included 200.000 bushels No.
1 Northern wheat, 160,000 bushels of
No. 2 red wheat, 76,000 bushels rye.
160,000 bushels corn, and 160,000 bush
els oats. Armour yesterday chartered
200.000 bushels additional No. 1 North
ern wheat, making 660,000 bushels char
tered within the past 10 days.
It Is Bald the cormglantlng throughout

The stocks of provisions appear to be,
according to the Schwabaoher state
ment, 20,750 barrels of pork, 12,000
tierces of lard, and 9,200,000 pounds of
ribs. Pork shows a decrease for' the
month of about 4,000 barrels, lard an In
crease of 100,000 tierces, and practically
no change. It looks as If provision
stocks at Chicago through April would
show but little change for the month,
although there was a decrease in April
last year of about 80,000,00.0 pounds. An
elaborate inquiry as to the hog supply
was made Oeorge M. Stern & Son,
who. In summarizing the results, says:
"We estimate the Western hog run for
May, June and July at about 82 per
cent of last year's supply, not many
points showing-an increase jwd more a
decided falling off."

for somewhat higher price," said Mr.
Wrenn. "Th feeling in New Tork seems
to be more favorable now than It has

some time to come. They all understand
