cess. The Crown of India will probably
go to sea tomorrow. , She will be the
first vexsel in years to sail without hav
ing secured sailors -from the combina
tion. .

been showered upon the newly wedded

clous, was served. Rev. and Mrs.
Blackburn leave this afternoon for the
Cascade Mountains. In Washington. Mrs.
Watson Is a woman of much culture and
refinement, und numbers her friends by
the score. Hev. Blackburn has bten the
pastor of the First Baptist Church for
nearly five years, and in that time haa
won the respect and esteem of pot only
his congregation, but all with whom he
has come In contact.

OREGON CITY. April 21 The public
schools may he closed Friday to allow
the teachers to go on a visit to the
Portland public schools. That was the
day set last week, but since then it has
been learned that examinations are to
be held on that day, so the visit may
be postponed. Up to the present year
each teacher has been allowed to spend
at least one day In the schools of the
metropolis, but the directors rescinded
that order last September when it was
learned that not all of the teacht-rs went
for the puiposi they were sent for.
By these visits to other schools the
Oregon citj teachers are enabled to
see how the work la conducted and the

of Dunsmulr not recognizing a delega
tion from the extension mines on ac
count of them belonging to the Western
Federation of Miners, all union miners
will be called out. Dunsmulr says the
union mines are still working. If they
have been called out, he says, they are
not obeying the call.
FATAL TRAIN WRECK.

FORT SCOTT. April 21. The Frisco
passenger train was wrecked near Ever
ton. Mo., this morning. The fireman
and a mail clerk were killed. The engi
neer and two passengers were fatally in
jured. A broken rail ditched the train
While traveling at the rate of 5 miles
an hour. The engine, express, mail and
baggage cars were a total wreck.

weekly crop report shows some retard
ing features. Spring wheat, particu
larly In Minnesota,' la alow. Farming
operations in the Central and West Gulf

need rain. Very slow progress is being
made in corn planting in the corn belt
owing to the cold and wet weather.

George Birdsall died last night He had
been connected with the police depart
ment since 1878. He was 111 some time
and his death was expected since Sat

Beginning May 3, the "North Coast
limited" passenger train over the
Northern Paclllc will, leave the Port
land Union Depot at i o'clock In the af
ternoon, one hour later than under the
present arrangement. This will be the
only local significance of a new time
card which goes into effect throughout
the entire system oil the date named.

of the Northern Pacific, in speaking of
the proposed change In time, made the
following statement tilts morning to a
reporter for The Journal:
"There Is no radical change and t no
particular significance attached to the
new card .which goes Into effect or) May

by a horse last Friday morning, receiv

eral was held yesterday afternoon, in
terment being in the Canby Cemetery.
