of "copy," a Journal man found H. C.
Whlttler, who has recently come hero
from New York to take charge of the
spreading- of this popular, progressive
firm's "Store News."
"The Journal want to interview you
on the subject of the coming expansion
of your house, your opinion of our city
a an Easterner and other matters on
similar lines."
"What are your Impressions of Port
land as a dtyT" The Journal man
asked.
"Well, I must say my hat Is doffed
to tho 'New City,' " answered Mr. Whlt
tler. "It 1 simply a wonder. Few
Easterners realise what a metropolis
you have here. Why, It's the New York
of the West. In fact, in many ways su
perior to that Eastern center. It Is
cleaner, healthier and has a fresher and
brighter business atmosphere than any
Eastern metropolis I know of, and I
have done work; In nearly all of them.
It Is a younger New York without its
filth, its selflshness and rottenness of
municipal government There is an air
of freedom here which makes a man
look around for the American bird, ex
pecting every moment to hear hv
scream.
. "The people are more free hearted,
hospitable and courteous; there Is not
that everlasting, rude jostling, that for
get fulness of the rules of ordinary po
liteness and civility that is met with In
large Eastern cities. 'Why, a man al
most forgets the chivalry due to women
after life in the busy centers of the
East Then again, the wonderful, un
precedented growth of your city, not
that of a mushroom character, nor of
the "boom" sort, but the steady, health
ful growth is something almost beyond
the belief of the uninitiated Easterner.
"X was privileged today to see a photo
graph of Portland 50 years ago, and it
was hard to believe that in half a cen
tury, or within the present generation,
the city has arrived at a point where It
takes Its place among the, great com
mercial centers of America. Your mod
ern buildings and up-to-date mercantile
establishments are simply unsurpassed
in any city in the United States. After
the disappointment of the Middle West
which section is away behind this, if
Portland Is a criterion. It Is refreshing
(o And here such modern methods and
'results. Many an Easterner comes West
to the Mississippi and then returns dis
appointed with the "West' and its
Cities before he has seen them.
"I wish every Easterner who leave
borne and travels toward the setting sun
would strike Portland in his travels be
fore his return, HIa eyes would surely
be opened, as mine have been to Western
energy, push, enterprise and success. A
young man today In Portland Btands
where our fathers stood in the little
Eastern towns of 76 years ago. which
have since grown to be the large cities
and trade centers. There is no better
investment today. In my opinion, than
real estate in Portlaad.
"Our store? Olds, Wortman & King?
Well, of course, naturally. I think it Is
the greatest and best of all tho big
stores of this section. Of one thing I'
am sure after a store' experience of
over S$ years (I started in store life at
the age of 14 years) after traveling
through and doing work In every one of
the New England states. New York, and
some of the Middle states 1 have never
found such complete organisation, such
unanimity of idea, such excellence of
merchandise and taste of selection and
display as in this store. It is as one
gigantic machine working with the regu
larity of a fine watch.
"The heads of tho house are tireless
as steam engines, the department man
ager and buyers nav been selected
from the very 'flower of tne country,
everyone an expert In his or her Una
and all working together like the small
wheels of a clock around the larger bal
ance wheels.
"The employes are selected from
among the very best workers in their
various lines. It Is the policy of the
house to employ local people so far as
Is possible, and taken all In all It makes
up one of the grandest store organlsa
tions It has ever been my pleasure to
see. In fact. I doubt if a superior one
exists in this oountry. Portland pebple
little know the details of this great es
tablishment. If they did I am inclined
to think that this 'Different Store' would
be obliged to occupy several blocks of
stores to accommodate the patronage.
"Yes, we are going to expand right
away. The plans are out and opera
tion will start at once. So far as al
ready planned, I can say: Our present
stores have for a long time past be
come too much crowded for the comfort
of our patrons and ease of transacting
business and we are making the new
addition to supply room for our over
flow. Among the features we are going
to Improve are elevator service, to make
It quicker and better. We shall make
it a daylight store, prisms and every
other device possible will be introduced
to throw light into every part of the
building. There will be entrances from
Fifth, Sixth and Washington streets.
This will be but the beginning of a
grand expansion by our house. So much
for our store. And now that I have
nearly talked you blind over my impres
sions of your city (and my adopted one)
for I am here to stay, at least for some
time. I am tired of .the nomad life of a
traveling advertising man and prefer to
devote my energies In the future to dis
pensing news of the store doings at Old,
Wortman & King's and our store, I
want to add a word for The Journal.
It's the right paper in the light Dlace
and must surely be a great factor In
newspaperdom of the Northwest and the
Coast. The way it nuts ud the new. nt
the day and serves It to it readers, in
telegraph and local service, its brirht.

the day which are 'next' to the 'com
mon people,' it strong, and fearlsaa
stand on matter which concern the oeo-
ple and their beat interest are to be J

not be subservient to any individual or
class that a cosmopolitan, growing me
tropolis like Portland needs, and she Is
indeed fortunate in possessing a news
paper of the calibre of The Journal.
"When your people- shall have gotten
in and Installed your big Hoe press with
it color page capabilities, you certainly
will have a paper fit to take rank among
the newspaper leaders of the land lit to
represent a representative Western me
tropolis like Portland."
The interviewer arose to withdraw
ofter a cordial Invitation to "come
again always glad to see newspaper
men," passed down through the Easter
throngs at the popular store satisfied
that Olds,, Wortman & King were indeed
'Hustlers from Hustlervllle."
Mr. Whlttler, by the way. is some
what of a newspaper man, having been
for a year, some years as-o in
of the business management of the Re
publican and Leader at La Crosse. Wis

helped somewhat to relieve the barren
ness of the Front street markets. There
Is now a large quantity of vegetables of
all kinds on the streets and most of the

Despite the fact that the Chicago mar
ket labored under adverse condition
this morning, the local situation, if
changed at all, shows a marked improve
ment. Flour Is selling, well locally and
the demand for all grades of grain for
milling purposes Is keeping quotations

The American Cigar Company an
nounces that beginning with May 1 the
quotations on Old Virginia Cheroots will
advance 11 per 1.000, the old price being

are anticipated the forepart of next
week unless receipts show a material

The poultry supply on Front street was
about cleaned up with the close of busi
ness today, the slight lowering of prices
making the market assume a more ac
tive tone,

The hop market Is dull, but there is a
better undertone noticeable. California
reports state the onion and potato mar
ket to be unchanged in tone or price. A
large shipment on the steamer Columbia
Is still on. hand In the Bay City,
