In the East Bide will have a number of
" fine thoroughfares which can be driven

out danger of bains; mudbound or choked
With tlUKt.
' The Alblna Improvement Aaaoclation
la agitating- the Improvement of several
streets in Lower Alblna. A continuoua
thoroughfare la alao wanted from Union
venue to the landing- of the Alblna, ferry.
In Multnomah Addition tn central
Alblna Board of Trade haa been exciting
Its members and the realdenta of that
section over the prospects of widening
Yaneeuver avenue to 0 feet. The same
organlsntloTl la also pushing the Improve
tnent of Mississippi avenue.
Terry Brings Aotloa.
In the southern portion of the city
the gollwood board has successfully
terminated the agitation for the 1m
erovement of Umatilla avenue. The im
provement has, already been advertised
and bids for the' work will soon be called
for, It Is quit likely that river gravel
will be the material used. If a favorable
vote Is recorded for the establishment
ef a ferry from the foot of Spokane ave-
riue. that thoroughfare will also have to
be redeckea. Talk of improving trie ave
tiu is already common and a petition
Will probably make lta appearance within
a ahort time.
At th last meeting of the Sell wood
- ernanfsaflon the matter--' ;;' Mil
waukle atreet and road from the southern
boundary of SWlwood down to the
street's Northern terminal, was agitated.
a' he MUwaukle street and road are the
principal outlet for all travel between
Clackamas and Multnomah Counties and
lta surface is too narrow to stand the
traffic The board also wants the city
government to survey another street
from Bell wood to connect with Haw
thorns avenue. The opening of another
street In that neighborhood would tend
to save congestion of the traffic which
fiow goes over the Mil waukle road,
nil Arenas toe Worst.
Grand avenue In Central East Portland
Is perhaps In greater need of improve
ment than any other or the city's thor
oughfares. From East Clay to Belmont
street the wooden pravement has disap
peared In a great many places and it is
trifling with Kate and a broken axis for
a Hamster to drive that way. Merchants
along the line have been demanding of
their landlords that the pavement be poi
tn first-class condition or they would
be compelled to move. A petition to this
effect was recently circulated among th
bualneaa men, but no action whatever
has been taken by th delinquent prop
erty owner. It la proposed to lmprov
the avenue with gravel.
Th mvt4 Boadways.
Th elevated roadway on th Eaat
8id are among th worst in th city.
Many of th streets have bean patched
so much that thsy are completely worn
out nd nails will not hold in their sur
face. On a number or the roadways tne
repair gang of the Engineer's Depart
ment'haa piled so much slabwood over
the worn places that the street resembles
the famous rocky road to Dublin.
In some cases the streets have been
o long neglected that they fall before
the city officials pay any attention to
them. Portions of East Washington snd
East Oak streets have fallen through and
travel over that portion of the city Is, in
consequence, exceedingly difficult.
The contract for the improvement of
East Oak street has been let for some
time and a part of the old rotten road
way removed and the property owners
and. their tenants are now wondering
when the contractor of the work will see
fit to begin operations. The contract for
East Washington has also been let. but It
la not likely that work will begin for
leveral months.
. ! Union avenue from East Oak to East
Morrison will noon be Improved with new
planking. Portions of the foundation of
the roadway will have to be renewed, as
It Is one of the oldest elevated streets on
tire East Side. The contract for the work
was let several weeks ago.
ELECTRIC FERRY
Sdwood Board Discuses Motive
'H'r Powers'"., ;' -
Sell wood resident n.v cot dropped
their agitation for a free, ferry by any
means. Xat week at wall-attended
meeting of th local board of trad th
subject was again brought o th surface
and discussed. ';.... i . ,
Th advisability of stretching- trolley
wire across th river from tlie foot of
Bpokan avenu and running th pro
posed ferry by eleetrlettjr we talked of
and mad a favorable impression upon
th member.. . It was argued that th
running of th boat by trolley would be
muoh cheaper and mora satisfactory than
by steam. noser. i
President D. M. Donaugh gav another
talk on th proposition and referred th
trolley matter to th ferry committee.
Th engineer of th Oregon Water Power
RaUwajr Company wiu M eonsuitea.
Want Wider oe4.
Thar wa considerable discussion over
the wretched condition of Mil waukle
atreet and avenue. The thoroughfare
during tn winter 1 a eea of mud and
traffic 1. very low. During th sum
mer months th road has about hair
foot of duat on lta surface and travel la
disagreeable. Thar was some talk dur
ing th meeting of requesting th city
officials to either widen Mllwaukl street
or survey another one from that portion
of the city te connect with Hawthorn
avenue. All th trafflo between Clacka
mas and Multnomah counties passes on
MUwaukle street and road, and the pres
ent thoroughfare la too small for several
teams and an electrlo car to pas at th
same time.
