BUILDING PERMITS. up a mm Union ; Meat .Company Announces Change, m.v :'- Higher ' Prices Predicted for All - Grades of Packed Mcats-r Fresh Mat's Lowered. The Union Meat Company ana ounces an advance of a quarter cent on tje (trice of Its various sides and backs of the smoked and salted varieties. The company also states that the entire packed meat market is stronger and present tendencies are for further ad vances all along the . line. Eastern packed moats and lard are unchanged in price. rreeh Keats Ars Weaker. With the possible exception of pork, the entire fresh meat market Is weaker and prices are dragging. Receipts of - prim, beef, have been too plentiful for the warmer condition of the weather and In order to make products move ome stock had to be sold slightly below printed quotations. ; Pork receipts are comparatively small and demand excellent. No changes ap pear In quotations. Zggs Sown to ie Cents. Although the receipts of eggs were not so liberal today in the local whole sale district, there waf nothing to stop the quotations from going still lower. The real market value of eggs Btands of a supply. Sutter Xaoalpta Largs. Receipts 6f creamery butter are more liberal and the market la easier. There are not, however, endugh receipts to cause stocks to accumulate to any great extent and no changes were made In quotations. Country butter is not ar riving to any extent. teams Colombia Arrives. The steamer Columbia arrived from San Francisco late last evening and this morning her limited supply of Cali fornia greens was distributed along the street The market Is quite bare of fresh vegetables on account of most of the stock from Los Angeles and South ern California being delayed by slides and wrecks. Bananas of the choice va rieties are scarce. No changes appear in the produce market prices. Wheat ilemalns Idle. There was very little doing in the grain market during the past seven days, both broker and farmer declining to do any business at prevailing prices. There Is till a strong demand for Valley wheat, but millers say that they cannot afford to pay the price demanded by the holders. ' v i The flour market Is stiff and the ad vance made by one of the local millers had a strengthening effect on general prices. Millers look for another ad vance. CHICAGO. Feb. 28. The Record-Herald says: All the bull Interests in corn yesterday were adding to their lines. The English crowd, headed by WellH, was taking July. Cudahy brokers were takYg May. Apparently Armour was takmg May and selling July. It was Juxit the sort of day to make bull opera tions easy. There was rafln all over the corn belt. No ono paid any attention to the cash wide of the market. The speculator now has but one thought, the big holdings of rich operators, and the prospect of trouble for . those who hap pen to keep short the ' May. There is still wonderment that no many conspic uous elements nhould be working on the sume side of the market, and there is a lingering suspicion tlat the market may not move along as auspiciously with bo much bull company as it might if there was lew. The situation is that at least three powerful interests are long on the market and apparently not act ing at all fn concert. "I thlaik at this decline and at this time of the year it is good judgment to try the buying aide of wheat," said Mr. William S. Warren. "In a measure, it is an almanac proposition. We are go ing into the season when wheat has its troubles, if it has' any. The buying side has the further merit that the price has had a considerable drop." " "I am bnt or the oatSTmarket, and nm going away," says Charles Howe, who has been conspicuous in oats all season. "I have ho decided opinion aa to the prospects . Just at present." "The foreign buying of provisions will show an increase within a few weeks," said Charles I Raymond, "and the demand will come on stocks unusually- small; almost too small. I think, to go around. It is not likely hog re ceipts for a time will be as large as they have been. It is not reasonable to look for any Increase before May." "There are all the reasons for buy ing wheat now," said Charles H. Requa. "There- were when Armour owned so much, arid the price was five cents high er. The supply of good wheat Is no larger than it was then.' The flour Situation - Is just as strong. There is this difference, pretty nearly .every trader was bullish then, and now nine out of ten are bearish." of a bear panic, and such episodes gen erally mark the end of a pronounced movement. Prices advanced 40 points within 24 hours. Such conclusive fluc tuations as these have In the past al ways spelt culmination. I would advise all my friends who are long on cotton to take profits at current prices for the following reasons: "First the cotton mill operatives at Lowell and Fall River have demanded an Increase of .10 per cent, in wages. If this Is1 not gaifced'ther will" be a strike, which will diminish the consump tion of cotton. If it Is granted, it will enhance the cost of manufacturing, and the difference, must come out of either the raw material or the buyer of goods. As the print cloth market is rather easier. It does not seem probable that It will come out of the buyer of goods. "Second, the loans of New York banks, as shown by last Saturday's bank state ment, are the largest on record, reach ing the enormous total of $950,000,000, while surplus reserves arc the lowest at this season In any year since 1899. The surplus reserve will be still further, re duced this week, and a period of very elose money, which will naturally restrict speculation, seems definitely in prospect" ' D. O.
