The projectora of the new line ure not definitely known aa yet, but It Is aupposed that either Oeorge Gould or James J. Hill of the Great Northern i behind the new road. All surveys have been made and right of way secured. But what gives the strongest appearance of truth to the Htory la the known fact that terminals have been purchaHed In' Oakland and paid for. Everything la said to be now in readi ness for commencing construction work. The merchant of this city are fluted at the prospect of u transcontinental railroad to compete with the establlHfTed linen, the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe. It ia regarded as certain that the new road will have the effect of re duclng freight rates materially between this city and the East. A number of the lower priced railway stocks came In for greater amount of attention, among them being St. Iouia. Southwestern. M. K. T. Wheeling and Wlaconsln Central. The Wabash stocks continued exceedingly strong, ami St. Paul was atronger and more active than it hna been for some time past. The money, and foreign exchange mitr kets were not essentially altered, but some attention was directed toward the very heavy losses which the banks have made to the sub-treasury this week, to day's fig-uies amounting: to over $5,600, 000. As exclusively stated in The Jour nal of yesterday, the advertising com mittee of the Chamber of Commerce met yesterday afternoon and discussed the advisability of advertising- the re sources of the state. After much dis cussion It was decided to refer the mat ter to the newly organized Oregon Bu reau of Information as that body has raised fUnd of $16,000 for the pur pose of advertising the state. The com mittee had two propositions before It either to advertise the state by means of booklets or advertising in Eastern magazines. Both matters were referred to the Bureau of Information. Kd. C. Herrln, a hop man of Salem, was In the city yesterday on business. To a Journal representative he said: "At the present time the highest price being offered for hops is 2fi cents, and u few buys of poor grades In small lots have been made during the past week at that price. I am Inclined to think, how ever, that the price will go back to 2 cents within the next few days. "The market Is unlet, but firm. It Is now estimated that there ure at least 12.000 bales of this year's Oregon crop yet in the hands of the growers of the state. "No contracts ate being made for next year's crop, because growers do not care to bind themselves. Many offers of 15 cents a pound ate being made, but they' have all been refused. "I don't think that the talk of the floods' damaging much of the Valley hop is true, although some slight dam age may have been done to some of the yards in I.nnc anil along the lowlands around Independence. The damage alto gether will not amount to much. A few poles may have beell dislodged that's about all. "There will be some slight increase in the acreage this season, but the yield of the state will In all probability be about the same as last season. The highest price which I expect hops to sell for during the coming season is"bet ween 12l4 and 15 cents. This last season we had everything in our favor Kngland and Germany were both quite short and the New York crop was likewise smaller than" during normal seasons. The for eign crop the coming senson promises to be heavy. WOODMAN DROPS DEAD. . (Journal Special -Service.) ROSKHl'KG, Feb. 6. O. T. Jones, a morning of heart failurs.
