On Dit
That Inside of ten years land
in. St. Johns will be worth as
much a i land in lrvin!ton. We
do rot doubt it. Every little
wh e a new industry is located
at M. Jo ins. Each industry em
ploys laborers and each laborer
brines his family. So the popu
lation of the place grows five
persons to each working man is
the usual proportion 500 labor
ers being 25CO inhabitants. Five
hundred employees is not a large
number for a single industry. St.
Johns will have many of these.
There are half a dozen concerns
considering today the establish
ment oi industr-ie at -St. - Johns,'
because the place has the best
Vater frontage and rail and river
facilities in Portland. In the St.
Johns harbor three ships are an
chored. They are there because
the Portland harbor is over
crowded. When accommodations
in the Portland harbor are ex
hausted there is no place for
Portland commerce but the St.
Johns harbor. What does this
indicate? When you are buying
real estate look to its future
Quarter acre, half acre, acre lots
$150, $300, $600, sold on in
stallments. Each lot fronting on
one or more streets and close to
car line. You can cut them up
nto smaller subdivisions.

-NEW ARRIVA1S.
Two German ships arrived in at As
toria last evening. They are the Kmilie
and the We mi, and they had been on
the outside several days waiting an op
portunity to coma in over tin- bar. The
Kmilie comes from Antwerp with a s'n
rrHt cnrjrrr which ts cnnsijrnrd to Mryer,
W ilson & Co. The Werra come from
Honolulu, and H under rharter to the
Portland Flour Mills. Several ships are
ahead of them, and they will not leave
up the river for a few days yet.
ON THE WAYS.
The French bark Hcnristtawas. taken,
on the ways this tnomlnf; at the Port
land Shipbuilding Company's yards. -This
is the vessel that struck on a snag near
Astoria last Spring, and was sunk with
a cargo of lumber. When raised she was
sold at auction. Hale & Kern, the con
tractors, buying her. They took her up
