" SCRANTON, Dec. 12. Before the coal strike settlement commission today the mine workers showed by witnesses that operators were cheatlryr their employes by making deductions for impurities in the coal after it had .been mined, even when that coal was pronounced to be en tirely free from slag and stone. The most important witness was Docking Boea Ridgway, formerly In the employ of the Temple Coal Company. Rldgway took the stand and told his story freely. It was his business to make reductions' In the amount of coal mined by each man during the day, the basis for these reductions from the total being the amount of Impurities in the yield from the pick and shovel of each. UNDER STRICT ORDERS. Rldgway told that he waa under strict orders from "tt employeW-'-to-'irjalrB- am average reduction of from S to 7 per oent miner, no matter ii mat coal was entirely free from lmfmrtttea and ready to be en tered in the markets. Ha emphatically denied the claim made by-the company that tha dockage did not average more than 1 per cent. Other witnesses followed Rldgway and several of these testified to the efforts made by, the operators to secure the call ing, oft of the strike. . Opposition to tha union waa also brought into the testi mony and it was shown where officers IBt miners' organizations were- frequently kept out of employment in the -effort to get them to renounce their allegiance to tha body. v ' PINKER TOCaUFFEL NEW YORK, Dec 12.
