REBUILD BRIDGE
Robert Wakefield Begins Work at
Madison Street
It has been decided by the county com
missioners not to rebuild the two spans
of the Madison street bridge as was orig
inally Intended, but only to replace one
of the spans. It Is said that the build
ing of the new dock by the Oregon Water
Power & Railway Company such a great
distance 'out In tho stream makes the re
building of the eastern span useless. The
contract for the work has been let td
Robert Wakefield, and he has already be
gun to assemble the various parts. As
soon as the steel truss Is finished the
contractor will remove the wooden piles
underneath.

Judge's Sidewalk Dirty.
Numerous complains have been made
to the police that a. high bank -on the
property of Municipal Judge Harry Hogue
on itussell street near Morris Is con
stantly caylng In, completely covering the
sidewalk. During wet weather the walk
IS impassable.

The 'Albina, police are on the. lookout
for . number of lads who attend the
Thompson School and use slingshots In

as possible. The police say that all boys
with the Instruments In their possession
will be arrested.

Laying Telephone Cable.
The Columbia Telephone Company have
been' engaged the past two days In laying
another telephone cable over the Bum
side street bridge from the East to the
West Side. This Will give the East Side
a bene service.
Rushing Tender Work.
Ths work on the new government
tender being built at the yard of Joseph
Supple, foot of Belmont street, is being
rushed wrfth all possible speed. The ves
sel will be used In the transportation of
supplies between the various naval sta
tions en ths lower Columbia.
St, John's School Exercises.
'The pupils of the St., Johns public school
gave a successful entertainment at the
school building-yesterday afternoon. The
program consisted of musical and liter
ary exercises.
FAST RAILROAD TRAVEL.
A Paris writer claims for France the
fastest railroad trains In the worhl. lie
says that hi Northern - RaHrontf has a

age speed of 63 1-2 miles an hour, .and on
the same route by other trains If regis
ters speeds of 61 1-2 miles an hour, main

An hour for distances exceeding 100 miles
at a stretch. The fact cornea Into Im
mediate contrast with the deplorable at
tempts of the English lines having boat
trains In connection with the channel
steamers. The Southeastern & Chatham
Railroad this year has conspicuously
failed to apprdach Its own record of last
vear one hour and 41 minutes from Lon
don to Dover pier, which works out at
something under 43 miles an hour for the
1-1 miles. Even with thts liberal time
allowance the English trains are never
on time, but the French are mvariaoiy
A record Is claimed In a recent run of the
mall express from Boulogne to Paris.
Owing to the late arrival of the boat
from Folkstone, the train was 46 min
utes late In leaving Boulogne, but the
engine driver made up time .and got to
Paris punctually to the minute. His
average speed for this run is said to
have worked out at 68 miles per hour.

been writing on "Droughts in Australia,"
Inspired thereto by the fearful' devasta
tion wrought in a large section of the
country. He- Is an authority on the sub
ject, for It was a long drought in the '60's
that reduced him from affluence to pen
ury, changed him from a wealthy owner
of many nocks and herds Into a stipen
diary, magistrate and coroner-and led to
story-telling as a supplementary source
of income. . His recollections cover 70
years. He remembers when flour was
1500 a ton In Sydney, In the '30's, In con
sequence of a drought. The Sydney board
ing schools, at one of which he was be
ing educated, sent their puplla home, be
ing no longer able t;o bear the cost of feed
ing them. After a review of the droughts
of seven decades he reaches the conclu
sion that "all droughts and records of dry
years fail in comparison with this one of
