The new SO-inch dredge 'Columbia," which ha jut been built by the Port of Portland Commission, will be ac cepted at a meeting of the commission late thia afternoon. A running trial of the dredge was made yesterday, at which were present M. c Banfleld, C. T. Swlgert. C. S, Adonis, Ken Selling and B. F. Tucker, of the commission, and Robert Inman. The commissioners were tendered the free use of Mr. Inman's launch, the EI-KauVr, for this trip. The visit of the commissioners to the dredge was a complete surprise to Super intendent Kelly and Engineer Kane. Full team wa gotten up, I. 9., 165 pounds to the quar inch, and the dredge was given a thorough trial. At the end of the trial all the commissioners agreed that the dredge exceeded nil their ex pectation because of its efficiency and that It reflected great credit on It de signer. LOCKWOOD, THE ENGINEER. The dredge was designed and built under the direction of J. B. ( Lockwood, th commission's designing engineer. After handing lnuils final estimates for the contract this afternoon. Mr. Ixxk wood will leave for his home In Seattle. The building of the dredge consumed a year's time, and during that time Mr. Lockwood ha resided in Portland One of the most remarkable feature of the dredge Is . the air pump, which maintains a vacuum In the condenser of 29 inches. A complete description of the dredge wag printed in a recent issue of The Journal. It Is the ide-i of the com missioner to throw the dredge open to the public In the near future. It is now workins opposite the North Pacific Mill. The commissioners have not as yetdec!ded where to place It at work, but it ia probable that Willow Bar wtll get first choice. It will no doubt be In great demand as It Is the most powerful dredge In the United State, and there are many place in the river which can make use of It'1 The dredge tender is under construction In Seattle, and when completed, the eot of both dredge and tender will be about 1230,000.
