Nelll Stock Opens a Season of
Repertoire Work
Tomorrow afternoon the Nelll Stock
Company will begin Its season at the
Baker theater, presenting "A Social
Highwayman," a society play In four
acta. Each act will be staged in a man
ner never before seen at the Baker The
atre. .In fact, the productions will be one
of the features that the management
lakes, pride in.
Tha company has been, selected with
a great "deal of care and such member
omes to Portland with a first-class East,
rn reputation. Experience is an ossen
tlal tha, makes an actor proficient. A
great many people get the idea that they
would 'like to go upon the stage and
apply to the management for positions.
In some of the stock houses throughout
tha eautitry-tliey enpage four or five prin
cipals and All In with amateurs and peo
ple who think they can act. And in some
Instances the management does not know
differently. (
James Nelll, who selected the stock
company, has had more than fifteen years
f managerial experience. He was fully
aware that in organizing this company It
must be exceptionally good, for the rea
son of its long engagement. And Man
' ager Baker has remodeled his theatre,
putting In flew carpets and draperies, and
With, the decorations and new paint used,
the Baker Theatre will present a cozy
'aippeararice at the opening. It may te
safely predicted that thla play house will
teoome very- popular before the season
as ended, .
