THE MARKETS,
The fight between the Portland Jobbers
and the ealt trust is on In earnest and
the retailers and buying public are reap
ing the benefits, A large slump was made
this morn in? In the Quotations of all
grades of salt and another decline Is look.
d for any day. The Jobbers have met
the prices of the trust and have gone
them one better in the matter of quota'
tloha Portland Is not the only place that
is interested in the fight as the fight has
been on In other cities whenever the Job
bers buoked against the iron-clad rule
of the conscienceless trust.
Retailers Were notified today by the
Jobbers of a decline in the quotation 1U
corn and roast peefs in 1- and petijfcrf
cans. The decline amounts to 10 cents
docen.
A firmness is noticed in the quotations
on lice. It Is now anticipated that higher
prices will prevail in the near future.
The steamer Columbia arrived from
Ban Francisco this morning, being a num
bar of hours late. A large cargo of Cali
fornia green apples, peaches and other
small fruits were received.
The meat market is demoralized. Re
ceipts though not at all liberal are too
much- for the present conditions. Owners
of stock are advised . not to ship their
products If they expect to realise any
thing for them as dealers do not want
them at any price. Quotations aret slight
ly lower than yesterday and still the
market Is overstocked. The city health
omoer was arouna tne street tnie morn
ing and inspected all the meats on hand,
At one of the houses he seized two veals,

A BRIDE
Leaves Husband After
Five Weeks-Wants
Wedding Ring
W. V. Toung. an employe ofthe Soath
ern Pacific shops, Is having troubles
that he never expected when he was
married five weeks ago to an estimable
young lady of less than half bis age. It
was a case of December and May he
40, she 17. Mr. Toung fitted up a home
on the East Side by the aid of his par-ents-lnJaw,
but he had little use for the
fixtures, for the bride left him on ac
count of his manner, and now she says
that she will never return to him. Toung
has retained two of her wedding' rings,
and it Is possible that some action may
be taken to secure them. When the bride
departed she left the Jewelry In the bu
reau drawer, and Toung Is supposed to
have them. Though be gave the rings to
the bride, she claims that he has no legal
right to them, and an effort may be
made for their recovery.
AMATEUR NIGHT.
Recently Edward Shields, proprietor of
the Shields' Park open-air show, announc
ed one night that he had endeavored to
secure local talent for his so-called
"amateur Sight" which is advertised to
occur every ""Ftjday evening. In eerio
comio style Mr.""ShleId9 declared ' that
every time he secured attractions of this
sort they became affected with frigid ped
al extremities when the time came around
for their appearance. Whatever, his trou
bles in the past, they are over now, for
he is certain that he has cinched three
attractions from the local field for this
evening that will cause surprise.
The new balcony, which will give much
additional seating room will be thrown
open, to the public tomorrow night. It
is strongly constructed so that it will be
perfectly safe, and to preclude the possi
bility of any breakdowns. ( ' ;
Mr. Shields will present an especially
attractive program next week.
TRADE TALK
Henry J. White, gent's furnisher, 169
Third street, says: "Our slaughter sale
has been a grand success. We have Just
passed through the busiest two weeks of
our business history in Portland. Our ex
perience In this sale has taught us that
the day of big profits in our line Is past;
that people will buy where goods are
cheapest and we are now more fully de
termined than ever to meet the demand
of the people. We purpose to depend
rather upon the amount we sell to a large
patronage, than upon big profits made up
on a few sales. We were fortunate in
securing a very attractive line of goods
for the season's selling and we were able
to buy at a figure that has made it pos
sible to sell at the startling low prices
we are Quoting on high-grade goods dur
ing this 'sale.
We are fully determined to continue
giving people better value for the same
money than can be secured elsewhere.
We find it pays not largely, but satisfac
torily." '. '
