STOCKMEN PUZZLED. Umlur tliis liondicg tho IVrt Inntl Orugontnn difcussos thu rnngu nml stock qtiurUion its follows: Stookinun in the great Kooky Mountain fituto rnngos nro tumble to account for tho low jirieo of cot. Inquiry lias brought out comparative data which showa timt there is no more stock, sheep or cnttle, on tho imirkut thnn there was a yenr ngo when prices were up, while every consumer of meat knows that tho prices of hcef ami r.tuttuu frnin tho block have nut in thu loast declined. On the contrary, in some local markets, including our own, incuts of nil kinds nro higher than they were a year ago. It is specifically stated that thu price of cattle on tho great ranges is now $2 to $U kt hunJred lees thun they were a yenr ngo. To add to the anxiotio of the stockmen the grasshoppers have been more numerous than for ma ny years, in certain poctions eating the range clean nnd even invading the alfalfa iields. Cattlemen of such sections will be forced to cell nt thu reduced prices offered, while those more fortunately situated will continue to buck thu "beef trust" for another year with a good chance of winning out when the "six mnrkets," viz., Chicago, Kan uas City, Omnhn, St. Louis, St. loecph and Sioux City, run short on meat. In the meantime thu "unorgan ized public, "as a Into writer on uu iuuism and trusts puts it, is at the mercy of whatever scheme is bo hind the livestock situation that has for its object tho reduction of the price of cattle and shcop on the range and a further increase in thu price of meat products in the great supply depots. To what extent thu lower prices of livestock have extended to the Oregon ranges tho public is not fully advised, lint that there is nt least partial stagnation in the ship ping movement on the ranges is indicated by n dispatch published a few days ago, which stated that in thu John Day valley there is at this time fully 50 percent more cuttle than can bo fed through the winter, notwithstanding tho fact that tho hay crop in this valley is better this year than for many yeats past. This overstocked con ditiou is due, it in said, to the luck of cattle buyers, indeed, accord- nig to a prominent stockman, "there have been no buyers at all in tho valley this foason." Of course there is a reason for the stagnation in the cattle iudus- tay. Clearly this is not duo to any decrease in the demand, as the l?uuiliu count market is constantly widening. Nor is it duo to tliu price of meat, as that is higher than ever before. It is evident that a master hand is at work shaping these conditions and a little later, before the ship ping coupon dotes, it will proba bly show itself in sending cattle buyur into overstocked valleys, who will oiler price that, though ruinously low, will U bettor than to permit tho ttock to starve to doath wbilu waiting for higher prices. Soekmen aro snid to be puxxlcd at the situation and iiuablu to account for it. They will prob ably bo onlightened in duo time as to the cause which makes cattle shrink while the high price of beef is maintained and tho market wid ening. TO TRAVEL IN PALACES. l'ians nro reported to bo com pleto for tho incorporation this week of a inillioii-dollnr company having for its object the operation of a train of five tolling palaces between Now York anil San Fran, cisco, with eo many improvements and conveniences that n l'ifth-Av. onuo hotel patron will not know ho is out of New York if ho does not look out of the windows, it will consist of five cars, and its patrons will bo kept exclusive by tho fact that piueongers will bo booked from tho one best hotel of onoh city through which it passes. It is planned that thu train shall have every convenience from n pulm ganlciu to a laundry. An undoavur will bo' made to Young Plants Every farmer knows that ionic plants grow better than others. Soil may be the same .uu! seed may seem the same but some plants arc weak and others strong. And that's the way with children. They arc like young plants. Same food, same home, same care but some grow big and strong while others stay small and weak. Scott's Hmulsion offers an easy way out of the difficulty. Child weakness often means starvation, not because of lack of food, but because the food docs not feed. Scott's Emulsion really feeds And gives the child growing strength. Whatever the cause of weak ness and failure to grow Scott s hmulsion seems to find it and set the matter right. Vtl ft liowtit. ChrraltU, tn, l-tntl nt.
