A WAR WITH ITALY.
Italy Indignant at the Stow Movement!
of Justice.
KHARS OP II09TIMTIKS I.AUOIIKO AT.
With nu olllcinl note, Huron
I'ltvu, the Italian minister, hits
dcclnred to the reerctnry of state
that the United Stated government,
not having given assurance that
the murderers of Italian subjects
acquitted by American magistrates,
tnul murdered in prison while
under the immediate protection of
the authorities of New Orleans,
would bo brought to justice, the
Italian government has found
itself under thu very painful
necessity of showing openly its
dissatisfaction by recalling the
minister of his majesty from u
country where an Itnlian represen
tative is unable to obtain justice.
Tho bnrou will soon leave tho
United Stntes, leaving the secretary
of tho legation in charge of only
mirront nlTnlrs. This action by
the Italian government caused the
deepest surprise in otllcial circles,
when the fact became known. It
has been generally upoed the
Italian government would at least
await tho action of the New Or
, Jcjui8 grand 'ury, which is charged
"with the investigation of the
bloody tragcly tit the New Orleans
jail. It nppenrs, however, that
information' received from its rep
lesontative must have led the gov
ernment to conclude that the grand
jury Investigation would fail to
result in tho punishment or even
tho indictment of any person con
nected with the killing of the
Italians.
It is the genera) opinion of all
the diplomats in Washington that
Italy has put her foot in her
month, so to speak, and made a
-' bronk thnt will make her ridiculous
before bIio straightens it out.
Italy has not yet mnde a motion
to prove that any of the men killed
. . in tho New Orlcuns parish prison
wore Italian subjects. lTnlil this
is done as a preliminary, it is
nothing short of impertinence on
tho part of Italy to ever pretend
to interfere in our domestic affairs.
Thoy wero to all intents and pur
jioses American citizens, and if
they ever had any allegiance to
the king of Italy they had abjured
tt inure is-no noiim, uowevcr,
thuftlio Italians are very angry.
Italy has her hands full trying
to retain her place as a llrst-clnss
jKnver in Kurope, and she is not
going to waste her energies in an
eHort to slug the I'nited States.
Italy is jioor. She has been main
taining an immense standing army
and navy for some years bnck.
Her expenditures have been greater
than her receipts for threw years
or more. The people of Italy are
poor, tho curroney is nopreeiuieu,
nnd in a genoral way tho country
!k in tin condition to make war on
' u power like tho United States,

THE EAGLK SQUEALS.
Tho editor of the Long Greek
Kaglo goes Into n howling rnge
over the chronicles that ape.'treti
in the Nkws, in its issue qt two
weeks ago, and hurls down annth
cmns iiion Dan Asbury, of this
pajier. lie nlso complains that
the chronicles cniuc out nt too late
a day; and tries to make it apcnr
tliat'tliey cast reproach and inmlt
iiK)ii the ladies of John Day, ami
suggests that they ought to lick
jioor Dun, for him.
Llironicle are a luslory ol wiial ;
has taken place, and aru not tif.li - I
ally written at the happening of j
the events they chronicle; but !
some time after they hate trans-
pi red and when the heat of buttle
(ins subsided, to the end that they!
niny Im a true record of history.
Tho chronicles, which so ap- j
jKmrcd in this pnM;r, cast no ,
reproach upon any lady or ladies,
nnd merely chronicled the fact thnt
thu patter "putted the fathers and i
sous of John Day, and some !
others," meaning by "some others," j
other voters of the county who did j
not reside at John Day; and did,
not intimate or insinuate that there j
was even one lady in John I'uy
who hud so lost her feme of pro
priety as to jiorinit tiiu patter to
pnt-her. The uinnngcincnt of tills
jmj)er hun too iniicli regard for
women to cast such a reproach
U)Oii them, or to ask them to take
up it-4 battles for it.
Sir John .MacDonald wnnts
Canada to inonoolizo the term
'American" and applies "Yankee"
to every man south of the Cana
dian border. Yery well, the
"Yankees" have a record of which
no American need be ashumcd.
