. III I THE GRMIT (M! NEWS July J. 75.90. The fact thtit n very largo per cent of the cases decided at the re cent term of the Supremo Court nt this place were reversed oulit to admonish our judges of the im portance of studying their cases somewhat. Deciding ensss "with n run and jump," as Col. Kolsay would say, is not the proper thing to do. fiast Orogonian. T ' : 3 U; S. District Attorney Mayo, ha decided to take all the cases against the various military wagon road companies of this state, to forfeit their grants, up to the su premo court of the United State, and .fudge Dundy has signed cita. Hons giving tho defendants in all these cases notice of the appeals taken and warning them to appear and answer in the higher court. Several republican county con ventions in Ten licence, notably at Nashville and Murfrceshoro, have voted down a resolution indorsing President Ilarripoii'it ndmini&tra. tiou. Iu one of these conventions about half composed of negroes, they were mostly "agin tho gov ernment," beeause, as one of tl Iioiii explained, the negroes of the South had been entirely ignored. It costs Uncle Sam to run the government iu all its branches up wards of S2 18,000,000 per annum. On the basis or 05,000,000 popu lation, the eoht of government per capita is $I(.!I0, or about SlU.liO for each family. This is cheap com pared with European countries. Tlio cost of the (ierman empire iu 188!) was about $!.i"0 a head; of the French Republic about 10 and about 70 per family. A report comes by telegraph that Franco is preparing to send out an expedition under the com mand of Hon. lloiilauger, to eireet the conquest of Mexico. If Franco attempts any such thing as tlr.t she is liable to receive a sound thiashing Germany on one side and the United States and Little Mexico on the other. "We cannot afford to see our neighbor on the south captured by any Kuropuan power. A short time ago six convicts escaped from the Texas reform pehool at Hiinlsville. The guard and a pack of bloodhounds follow ed the trail of the fugitives until tho hounds became exhausted, whon a fresh pack was sent bellow ing on the trail. This thing of hunting human buiugs with fero cious blood-houdds is most ultra eiotiH. Indolent guards should not be permitted to employ such barbarous means to make amends for their own carelessness. Tho postmaster general has been compelled to send a guard of men to White Springs, Florida, to pro tcet tho Mormon Ron was appointed to succeed O K. I'axtou, a hold over from Cleve land's administration, He ap pears to have been very unpopular and a symstcimitie boycott was im mediately instituted by the iuhab itants of the town, who mailed and received their letters through a small postolllee a few mile distant. A wonderful tree is the caiuatiba tree that grows iu MniJI. Kvory part of it from its root to its leaves is put to soiiiu good use, and alto gether it furnishes food, light, lum ber fences and medicine for the Jlruzilinns. The Fca6on why there aro no (ieorge Washington' in tho pros out generation is very simple. (Seorgo was willing to chop down a whole tree, while the men nowa days don't oven want to split tho kindling wood. Chicago's proposed Columbus Tower, ti,000 foot high, ia a pure limine enterprise, lmed on tho experience of the Kilfel To wot in Parts. Its projectors ask no help from anybody, but expects to spurn! 2,000,000 iu the construction, and to get twice that amount of money hack again during thu ex- iiiuiuou. I - . 111 . A 1 r.uropu is nauie to oursi into tho devastating llame of war at any moment for no other reason than iU own preparation for coullict. If (ierinauy and Franco wero to disarm, restoring sturdy muscle at its best estate to the ranks of gain ful pursuits, instead of lighting it by battalions to do tho horrible and unchristian work of throat slitting, there would be dawn of permanent pence iu liuropo. Sullivaii who was indicted for engaging in a prize tight with .lake K'ilraiu was called in the criminal court at Purvis, Miss., last week. Sullivan was present with his counsel and friends. The courtroom was crowd ed withpcoplo anxious to learn what disposition would ho made of the celebrated case. The indictment was read to Sullivan, and upon be ing asked to plead, he replied "guilty." Tho court then senlene ed tho champion to pay a line of 500. It is generally supocd that this action of tho court was in response to the almost popular de mand that a tine irstoad of im pi'Uoiimcut should be Sullivan's punishment. The 500 was im mediately paid. Ail rnoNlic. AiwiNlunla in Ufil Vfltjut NOTICH FOIt PUBLICATION. UimI Olllra at IIuihi, Dr.. Jum M. !") Tumi I mo.v, II 18 A IniimUrator It is a ditlietilt matter to deal with that class of men who will neither give nor receive a delfinito proposition looking toward com pensation. If, on one hand, you meet a man who says, "that w ill ho all right; I guess wo won't have any trouble about that pait of it," b'et it down that there will bo trouble on just "that part of it." If, on the other hand, you liud a man who is always declaring, "Vou'll not lose anything by this; I'll see that it's all right' you may ho suru it will bo all wrorg iu tho end. When two men of this sort get together, and tho ser vices aro of such nature that to do teruiiue their exact valuu at the time of their inception is impossi ble, the end will be a misunder standing, mutual dissatisfaction, ossibly an estiaugemeut. Vet there is no ease iu which a proha able value cannot be got at. If you consider matters ns n complete affair, and estimate tho valuu of results as you plan them to hap pen, you can never bo far wrong. If ot.o cannot do that, ho has no business to undertake to make contracts at all. It may ho that there are times when a man may go into a business engagement without a deiinitu idea of what his : pay is to be, and there may be men who will always sottle satis factorily.
