THE GRANT COUNTY HEWS,
June o. JSDO.
Election day is nn ovent which
limy almost he called momentous.
It is one nt which timo every citi
zen has n sovrcign right to express
iis convictions at the polls. The
day of disappointment or of re
joicing now being over it is fitting
tlmt every newspaper in tho Itiiitl
which takes delight in seeing any
cortain party victorious should
gie its campaign rooster u chance
to crow as early n tho result is
known. The Ishwh caics not for
party in Grant county, therefore
it never displays a political rooster
on tho occasion of an election.
"Wo have, however, a rooster of an
altogether unknown species which
wo introduce before tho result of
last Mondiiv's election is deliuilelv
known. Don't know whether he
can crow or not; if he can ho is at
liberty to do so.
President Harmon' has sent a
special inessngo to congress calling
attention to the recommendation
of tile Pan-Auieriean congress for
a survey of the proposed grand
trans-continental railway, connec
ting North and South America,
mid transmitting n letter to secre
tary lllaino giving details of the
proposed work and asking that
congress appropriate S05,()0(),
which is the anion ut estimated as
tho share of the Tinted States in
tho cost of the preliminary surveys
to determine the best and most
economical route for the railway.
The lino of this railway is to be
neutral territory forever; all mate
rial necessary for its construction
and operation is to bo admitted
free of customs dues by every
country through which it shall
run, and its property and reve
nues shall bo forever free from
taxation in any form. The build
ing of this road will bo a great
work and ouo that cannot fail to
mid largely to tho trade of the
United States.
Senator Stanford got tired wait
ing for tho senate committee on
liuaiico to net on tho resolution ho
introduced some timo ago instruc
ting that committee to inquire and
voport upon the feasibility of tho
government's loaning tho farmers
money at n low into of interest,
taking mortgages on real estate as
pocurity, ardlias introduced a bill
providing that the treasury shall
Joan upon any unincumbered agri
cultural laud one half its assost-cd
valuo at 2 per cent, intoro&t. Tho
bill, although strongly favored by
many thoughtful people, will prob
nbly'niCAt Jlio fate of tho senator's
resolution, ami never -bo reported
back to the senate. Stanford is a
slick one; ho owns immuneo tracts
of land, and would like to get a
lot of cheap loans from the govern
ment for purposes of speculation.
A bill has been introduced into
congross providing that "any per
son who shall disfigure tlio nation
id ling, either by printing on' Fiiid
ilng, or attaching to tho same or
otherwise at.y iidvortUoiiiort for
public display, shall bo guilty of
a misdemeanor and on conviction
thereof shall bo fined in any sum
not exceeding 30 or imprisoned
not less than thirty days or both."
Senator Illair has introduced ouo
good resolution in cougiots. It
provides for an amendment to thu
constitution providing that it shall
ho unlawful lor either the United
States or individual status to att
thoiizo thu establishment or main
tenance of lotteries or any distri
bution of-prizes by chance.
The United States supremo court
has handed down it decision aHir
miug tho constitutionality of tho
unti-polygniny Jaw of llah, and
ouo holding' that no state has a
right to make laws interfering with
commerce between states.
Mrs. Catherine Sharp, of Phila
delphia, is reliably vouched for as
being 112 years old, and of well
preserved faculties. When n little
girl she sold milk todonora! Wash
