Mills of this place on Satur day evening the 23rd insl., by An dreas lliinpon, a Danih shecphcr der in the employ of Hall Bros. Upon receiving information of tho accident early on Sunday morning we summonsed a coroners jury and prowodod to tho scene of tho shoot ing and held an inquest, when the facts of the shooting wero about as follows: Mr. Mills had comu (0 this place 011 that day and left Into in (ho af ternoon for bis cabin 011 Bear creek, on George Riley's wagon antl rode part of the way home. When a lit tle before dark in tho evening he left tho team at Win. Hall's rtwi dence and started across the hills on foot hv a noaror trail (0 his cab in. At the time of leaving the team Mills wan somewhat under the influence of liquor ami had a bottle with him containing liquor. Some time after dark in attempt ing to walk down (ho (mil lending on lo Bcnr creek, when near thu bottom of (he hill ho must havo stumbled into a ditch about three feet wide by two feet deep upon his head, ns the bruises 011 his forehead would indicate, with such force as to become dazed, nnd in this condi tion was attempting to crawl on his hands and knees among fhe rocks. Hanson took his gun and left Ids housu and went to where thu object could he fceu, and after trying (o make the dogs go to the object nnd foiling, began to shoot. He could not say how many shots he fired at the nhjifet, but at the inquest we found eight shells from his gun on the ground of from eight to twenty steps from where the body had lain. Upon finding his mistake he sat the gun down by the rocks and picked the body of Mr. Mills up ard carried it into his house and iaid it on the lounge in a dying condition, and ho and his wife took their child and started to the ranch of Hall Rro's on foot and reported the facts. Mr. Win. Hall sent im mediately to this place for a doctor and started hack to the sheep camp himself, but only to find Mr. Mills dead. Thomas II. Mills, the deceased, was a native of New York State ami as we are informed has a son living in Now York City who is a telegraph orator Ho was a man about 70 yeais old, and was one of the pioneers of Grant county, hav ing come here in tho early sixties.
