And Jim Brown is one of the cential lignres in tiie story which is told. In lSlJI) there was stationed in Cuthbert a company of fed eral soldiers as regulators and general supervisors of the peo ple of the surrounding country. Colonel Williamson, a man of feeling and discretion, was in command. Under him was Lieutenant Charles Murphy, a Younif man who was eoiirieous and oblicrtni. Lieutenant Mur phy had a brother in Blakely, who was also an oHicer in his company. The Bkkcly oilicer received orders from his superi or one day to proceed on foot, in citizen's clothes, to Cuthbert, where he would receive the funds necessary to pay off the company for the quarter past. In Cuthbert lie spent the night in his brother's tent, and early the next morning set out on the return trip. About six miles out he stopped at a neighboring farm to rest. While there he disclosed the object of his jour ney, and told of the money on his person. Among those pres ent was Jim Browm, a farm hand, poor and friendless, tilled with the idea that it was no harm to kill a yankee, he set. about laying the plans to get the vouiijr oilicer out. of the way and to secure the booty. "Where are von traveling?" said Brown. "To Blakely," replied the lieutenant. "Then vou are wronjf, m v friend. This road will never get you there and the farther you go the farther away you will be.M "Indeed!" said the oilicer in surprise, "how can I .teach the right road JM "I'll agree to nut ooi: straight for a quarter,"' Brown replied, f Atteralittie ore immaries the two started out lJrown m tne lead, Murphy following. They left the Blakelv highway and by taking to the woods ami fields .succeeded in reaehinf the swamp of a small muddy branch. This Urown f-aid they would have to cross. At a,i op portune time, just as it looked as though no one was near, Brown stepped aside and allow ed the federal to pas- in front. When by a dextrous and quiek movement he drew a pistol and lired, the striking a vital point and producing infant death. i It was but the word of a mo ment to secure the money ami depart. It was not long before a posse secured Brown and lodged him in jail in Cuthbert. A few of the company secured the prisoner and placing a rope around his neck, swung him to a most convenient limb. Colo nel Williamson ran up with a knife in haiid and cut him down. lie then placed a spec ial guard arouikl him, and at the first opportunity sent him to Macon, wheri he was tried, convicted and hung. Jlis re mains were sent Jack home and interred. Notwi hstanding the prevalent feeling at that time none were found who sympa thized with the murderer, and had he been tried by a jury of liis fellow-men he doubtless would have suffered the same tate. But now cemes the strangest part of the stoiy. The night after the murder the dead man's brother, while peacefully sleep- .imrJuJiL,tent..was.awakened bv. a violent flnttorintr n sides. They made Mich a noise that he could not she;', with their flat, Hap. It wa- perfect ly calm, clear, bright moonlight night, as still as still could be. Not a sound could be heard save the hoite oT the cloth tent. The young lieutenant arose and walked outside. At once the noise ceased. It must h.ive been a fancy of the imagination thoight he, and in he turned. But not to go to sleep. After attiring himself of his uniform he dov. n on his bunk to! think. Something seemed to weigh unun his. mind. An hour passed and the soldier turned over and fell a-kep. Again he was awakeU by the noise oi the cloth tent a.; though in a violent tonn.
