The legislature las made it the duty of the sher iff, deputy or constable "to search without warrant any wag on, carriage, cart, sleigh or shed trunk, box, hand-bag, satchel, blindly or clothing, conveyed or worn along any road or street in the state for intoxicating liq uor." This looks like fanati cism run mad. The annexation discussion has had the eifect of developing a new party in Canada. It is not in favor of annexation nor of remaining a part of the Uritieh Empire. It declares its attach ment to constitutional mon archy as the best form of gov ernment, and wants Canada to be an independent kingdom with a sovereign all her own. Neither pains nor expense should be spared to get at the inner workings of the -order, and to arrest and punish those whoso guilt can be established. If they are lawless men, or men of no repute, they should receive the punishment they merit, and if, as has been shown to he the case in Ohio and Indiana, they are reputable men, or have been esteemed such by their neighbors, the reasons for exemplary punish ment would be materiallo intensified. An encroachment from the Puritan side is4he bill before congress, introduced by Senator Ulair, of New Hampshire, to enforce observance of the Chris tian Sabbath, to prohibit the carrying of mails, and to pro vent the running of railroad trains and all other public con veyances on that day. It is an attempt to enforce on the nation the bigotry that exists in the laws of the several New Eng land states, prohibiting all trav el or pleasure riding on Sunday. Those who wish to observe Sun day should have a right to do it, and should be protected from wanton disturbance; but what authority is there under the Constituion to force people to observe a certain day as Sunday? There are denominations in the United States numbering hun dreds of thoussnds of members who observe Saturday as their Sabbath. Why should they not have the same rights as those who. believe in Sunday? Such laws as the one proposed by Senator Blair would be an en teraing wedge that would split our government into pieces, where the gigantic Rebellion failed. It would seem that in these days of enlightenment and progress, the demand made by these pious cranks would be un heeded, and their clrorts to de The best mind cure is to make up one's mind to be con tented.
