"Id like to make a report that
my wife has run away." said a
citizen of Chene street at police
headquarters yesterday .
'When did she go?"
''Two weeks ago."
'"Haven't you been a little slow
in getting around?" queried the
sergeant.
"Weil, you sec, I was digging
a cellar, and I hated to lose any
time. And nnnother thing: 1
didn't know but she'd get sick of
the fellow and come back.
'T.ut she hasn't?"
'"Xot yet. You can take the
report; but give her aimother week j
to get around in. This is the I
fourth time she's gone, and she's
always come back inside of three
weeks."
'You must be used to it?"
'Oh, yes. You've got to take
the world as you find it. Give
her aimother week, sergeant, and
then if you find her advise her to
come home. Tell her she can't

Revolutions in Kcuador are
frequent : they usually begin by
an attempt to a.-sassinale the
President. The plan of proced
ure is usually for the disconten
ted political faction to create a
mutiny in the army, either by
bribe to the oflieers or prmises
of promotion. As the private
soldiers always obey these olli
ecrs like so manyautomatons and
are as willing to fight on one
side as the other, to secure the
oflieers is to secure the army.

bear a charmed life: as for three
years, while he has been Rresid-

numerous re

January. ISsti, while he was
going from Guayaquil to quito.
He was riding, as tiavelers usu
ally do, by night, to escape the
heat of the sun, when his small
escort was attacked by a band of
mountaineers and lied, leaving
the President to look out for
himself. He jumped from his
horse, ran into the forest which
encloses the road, ard creeping
through the trees to the river,

foot to the hacienda of a friend
where he found refuge. For two
days and nitrhts 1 j was in the
forest without food, and when he
linaly reached a haven he was
totaly exhausted. Fori: week or
ten days he lay ill with a fever,
couriers were sent to Guayaquil
and 1'uito, arriving before the
reports of his assasiination, as

of his- safety.
