Dancing in Early Times.
A curious book on "Dancing"
has been printed and re-cinbel-lished
under the the superin
tendence of a lady who was for
merly connected with the opera.
It is the "Orcheso graphic" of
of Thainot-Arbcau, a presuma
bly jovial canon of Langreos,
who llourished about 1550. The
book gives a complete history of
dancing in the sixteenth eentu
rv, and it contains engravings
which indicate the correct atti
tudes of the dancers. Among
the operations of the light fan
tastic toe which aie described
are the Bassedansevvhich was a
v ry serious aiTair, dating from
the thirteenth' century, and
principally patronized in the se
lect circles of society. Next
came the Pavanc, in which the
pavalier snatched a kiss from
liis partner before giving her
up; the Gaiilarde. a very lively
i
affair, and the Volte, a rather
voluptuous convultion, during
which the cavalier lifted his
partner in the air, thus fre
quently displaying line ankles,
t'.io occasion icing improved by
the ladies of Cour dei Yalois to
wear richly embroidered gold
and silver garters. The vener
able canon also discourses learn
edly on -the Courante, a dance
of Louis XI Y.'s; the Alleman-
H,le, ., favorite chonsrnphi, di-
version under Louis XV ami
De Pompadour; the Gavotte, a ,
