A MISSION MIRACLE. The Power of a Good Man's Voice. California is not obliged t lookto the old world for miracles, for there are many recorded by the mission fathers, while they were attempting to convert the natives. One of the most stri ic ing is told by Hubert Howe Ban croft, in his "California Pastoral." It is of Padre Jose Maria Lalvi dra, than whom no missionary no better deserved a place in heaven and a name in history. He was eminent in talents, virtues, and efficient services, particularly in the development of the material resources of San Gabriel and other mission districts. He reatly loved to engage in hand- to-hand conflict with his arch enemy. Satan, at whom he would scream, kick and spar with his fists, until the devil was to fright ened to come near him. One day in spring, while the pious father was blessing San Juan Capistrano by his presence, he walked out among the cattle, his eyes fixed upon his holy book, and his soul communicating with heaven. "Have a care, good father," shouted a vaquero. 'He for whom God cares, my son, himself need have no care." calmly replied the priest, as he raised his eves and encountered i the threatening attitude of a mad ; bull. Then lowering them to his l..wkl- tttif i tnwwl 1 1 it tni l t tir i. mjiv itii 1 1, i w milium mm i.iiOf,, j turning neither to the right hand j nor to the left. The beast bel lowed lustily; whereupon the , father began to sing a hymn. I The beast tore up the earth with ! I his feet' throwing dirt upon the sacred vestures oi un priest. Then the animal charged upon the padre, while all who saw it held their breath in horror, feel ing sure that the good man would be gored to death the next moment. "Peace, peace, malign not spir it!" the father said, and smiled; 'come, come, wouldst thou throw dirt on me?" The mad bull paused, then raised its head, dropped its tail, and walked away to another part of the field, overcome 1 y the power of God and the magic of a good man's voice.
