IDENTIFIED AT LAST. Story of a Soldier Who for Twenty Years Didn't Know Who he Was. . Chicago Tribune. The strange case of Hugh Thompson lias just passed through - the Pension Office. It is a re markable storv. Thompson left home -i boy eighteen U march with the Union forces. At tho battle of Chickamauga he was wounded in tho head, and from that time until 1872 his life is a blank to bim and his friends. The arm' record shows that he was at the" battle of Chickamauga. After that he was reported mis sing, and until a few months ago I his family mounted bim as dead, i Under this impressiou his father ! applied for a pension in 1 875, but was refused because he was not dependent at the time of tho sup posed death of his son. From the battle of Chiekamauga until he was restored to his friends, Hugh Thompson did iyot know his own name. Until 1872 ho had no consciousness whatever. Where be spent tho interval he does not know. In that year he was walk ing near the little town of Cleve land, Illinois, when tho memo ries cIf tbc war relumed. He did not know his name. He was clad in old soldier clothes, and a bluo soldier overcoat. He dimly re called a creat battle in which bis comrades were bard pressed, j and that was all. To his mind the J battle was iust over. From that ' time until last year ho was a cease . less wanderer. He bad intelli gence enough to care for horses and do odH chores, but bis name, his familv, and his re-'imont were all a blank. In his wanderings lie made his borne us Michigan, Illin ois, "Wisconsin, Iowa and Kansas, picking up three wives, all of whom are dead. His misfortunes appealed to tho old soldiers. They cared for bim and made many efforts to learn his history. Among them be was known as "Shorty." "Old Reliable" at.d the "Nameless Soldier. " In a lit le Testament to which he clung through all his misfortunes was written the name of Thompson, aud this was supposed to be his name. Some time last year he . was at a soldier's meeting in Mich igan. His story was printed in a local paper. This found way to Van Wert county, Ohio, wh-. re the elder Thompson lived. Hope was revived in the old man, who had mourned his son as dead for twenty-five years. He began a search for his son, and finally found him in Kansas, and brought bim back to the scenes of his childhood. . Many tniugs which had baffled memory were recalled. He had been engaged in youth toairl to whom he remembered as "heavy set," and although a quarter of a century bad passed there was some peculiarity about her that led him to recognize her at sight Ono day he was taken to an Uncle's, where many bours of bis youth were past. As ho came to the barn a flash of intelligence came to his face, and be said that was the barn be bad so often -tried to re call. His own people only identified him through tho Testament which i his cousin had given him, and which ho had prserved, together j with some versos she had written. ! Tho Pension Commissioner is sat- j isfied of his identity, and a pen sion will be issued to the pooi wanderer in a few davs. Too Much At Home.
