The scene of the conflagration was the residence of Hubert Lock wood, situated in the very heart of tho cily. No time was to be lost, and none was lost, for while a part of tho crowd formed them selves into a bucket brigade others adjusted the hose to tho fire hy drant just across the street, and a gone stream of water was turned on the inside of the burning build ing, which by this time was be coming immensely hot. 15y a mi raculous providence the fire w;is subdued and the blackened shell of si building stands to-day as a re minder to the pjoplc of what a narrow escape they had from a repetition of the scenes of 1870 when everything in the place went up in smoke. Snow on the roofs prevented adjoining buildings from taking lire, and the Canyon City water work d d the balance. But we again ur:je the necessifv of purchasing a hose-cart and some new hose, and also of organizing a hook ami ladder company. Every hotly worked with a will, and one notieable feature was that some who had not a dollar invest ed in property here wore foremost in the work of extinguishing the Uames. Mr. Lockwood and family lost almost everything they had in the house, as the lire, which origin ated in the bed-room, hail gained such headway when discovered , that not much time was had to save the household effects. A sub scription was circulated for their relief, and quite a sum was raised. We are all thankful that the re sults wore not niorft serious.
