Grant Co. News rOBfilSIIED EVERY THURSDAY MOUSING January 19, 18 SS. Tlie mineral wealth of our country seems inexaustable. The statistics of the mineral pro duct of last year, compiled hy the United States geological 511 r vey, shows the largest amount ever recorded for any country in a single year, being valued- at 05,1)00,000. The average decline in wool during the past twelve months has been 2A cents er pound or about ten per cent. As the present quotations are largely '.nominal and prices are weak, the real measure of decline in jpoint of fact is even greater. There has been little wool sold since the President's message was promulgated, and the views of buyers and sellers are wide (apart. The effect of the message 'has been to discourage many holders of wool, which is shown by the increasing pressure to iforce it upon reluctant buyers. Tt is said that Jay Gould is expected home the latter part of this month. A congressional committee have recommended his indictment and punishment on account of crokedness in con nection with the Union Pacific road, and the district attorney of the city of Xew York thinks he can send him toSingSing state's prison on account of his swind ling operations in connection with the Kansas Pacific. Noth ing would please the average jS7cw York juryman better than to find him guilty if there was a pretence to hang a verdict upon. When a man like Gould begins to go down he goes a long way be fore he stops. ""What man has joined to gether, man may put asunder,1' holds a "Western J uslice of the peace, who has recently granted a divorce after the manner of a dissolution of jKirtnerhip. A man and woman in Michigan, after a short wedded life, recent ly walked eight miles to the jus tice who married them and demanded a divorce. After a command to ''I'njinc hards," tliir justice jji uccocU fct ntimiii- ister an oath of mutual renunci ation to each jitrty. Then stapnintr to the door he loudly proclaimed the divorce. lve eeivingno objection, he pro nounced the marriage annulled in the following words: "Then by virtue of the ower m me vested by the Legislature of the State of Michigan and my c.fli "cial oath. 1 hereby declare the mrtnership heretofore existing - . - ..... . to Ikj this tiny diolvexl by inn- i timl coiiftt nt.
