AC T. ,-Ty-day we , j?innch upon the troubled bosom tif.tlio joural- istic sea, with it?', wreck-strew n flhorej another : ;nng an hope ful cnift with a "iide and pleas ing expanse of f "lire before it, and a large, .flutig" void for It was our intention some weeks auo to take oil our coat this very day, and begin the reformation and regeneration of the wicked old world in which wo are at present endeavoring to pay our board, but this decision was reached on the impulse of the moment. Jy this time we have calmed down to some ex tent, and have decided to first turn our attention to paying oil the chattel-mortgage entered up araiii6t thiB establishment. "When that be done, we shall be ready to take up the matter of reforming the wicked old world. It is not meet that the wicked old world shall occupy our valu able time, when a grasping monopolist with a wart on his nose is holding our press and tvpes in his close embrace by a chattel-mortgage and exacting seven per cent, interest, ami whilst a quarter-sheet bill for a church fair is awaiting attention on the job-book. Hut the wick ed old world shall be shaker up all in good time if it will just be patient. Weenterinto this undertaking not without some acquaintance with its important duties and the fullest realization of its very grave responsibilities. We have edited one paper that had only a n income of six patent can-openers, a gross of very inferior horse powders, an electric liver pad, eighty-five cents in cash, and four doen boxes of anti -bilious pills. That whs bad enougb, and yet we did not complain until a number of warm personal friends, who had taken exception to some bit of pleasantry iu our columns, called one evening in a sort of impromptu way, with a bucket of tar and a bag of feathers. I'ut while the chairman of the delegation was getting ready to deliver the opening address, we cKm'ied out of the window and left them to get along without us the best they could. In launching the lirst number of The Weekly Persimmon Pole as a new civil i.er and great nnldic oninioii moulder, we hone r i n. ....,i.i ioi oeiier reruns iiian am;uni our maiden elFort in journalistic walk:--. We are older now than we weie some years ago, an 1 we know a great deal more now than we did when we were younger and had more hair upon our hump of veneration. Age has knocked some of the sharp corners off u., and whilst we have not been acquiring beauty and style in the contiguous past, wi have been laying in a large stock of horse-sense, which is intended to teach a bald-headed man to get under cover when it hails. It will be our constant en deavor to please everybody. That, is the grand plan on which we purpose running this jour alistic side-wheel steamboat, and if we run into a snag we shall back out an try it again. Every person who takes this paper and pays for it shall be our honored and esteemed fellow-citizen just as low as "sorts" hold out. Every man who advertises with us shall be enterprising and progressive, and sell the chcap- est goods in town. Ave shall keep constantly on and ready for immediate use a large assort ment of such pleasing little il lusions as "The Cbarming and Accomplished Daughter of Our Fellow-Townsman," "The Fair and Happy Iride of our Rising Young Friend," "Our Learned Divine," "Our Skillful and Sue cessful Physician," "Our Urbane and Qontlwihiny Gerpse-Em -balmer, and "Our Graceful aiid Accomplished Free-Hand Beer Drawer," and we shall try in all cases to put these in where they .will give consolation, and bring in the doubting and hesi- tatinjr with kind words and two dollar bills. We shall not intentionally of fend any man through these columns. We do not like car nairc between meals, and have not been in the habit of carry -imr a double-barreled shotmm o r- with which to exchange salnta tions with personal friends. Our physique is not robust, and if any man desires to settle a difference with us in a way to break the "brie a-brac," and muss up the carpet, and occasion talk, and will send us word when he is coming, we will strive to be out. Wc are no coward, but we can,t buy new furniture for this ouVe every Monday morning, and it will be five long years before our gen tlemanly and courteous under taker has run up a bill for ad vertising sufficient to lay us away decently in calm and peaceful repose. Some e litors woald want to make an exciting item every week four The Persimnun Pole by whipping a well known fellow-townsman, or "vice versa;" but we do not. We prefer less exciting news, unles wo can get exciting news without so much exertion, and wear and tear on our suspendeis. While wo shall not be sensa tional, we shall endeavor to the best of ourability, keep this usual ly quiet town in an intense state of excitement as long as human nature will monkey with buzz saws and punch game out of its liar, with the butt end of a shot- ini:i. Iiight here we want to impress on the minds of this intelligent an 1 warmly appreciative com inanity the necessity on their J part of furnishing us with such interesting hapj ennings as may come under their notice We want all double-yolk eggs laid ! on our table ()jr friends with live-Wrel chickens and tall r?r stalks of corn will please not pass us by. If the son of any esteemed follow townsman should undertake to amuse him self hy tickling with a straw the hind limbs of a mule, the es teemed fellow-townsman should kindly send particulars, together with the age of the boy and tim of the funeral, as soon as the re mains are mile eo nTortaV.e. Snake items will always be ac ceptable; but ourold sabicribers who meet brand new styles or serpents thir.y-nino feet 1 n ..k widl !i those who are chased sixteen miles and a quarter by that fnnry old-style newspaper snake, which is accustomed to take its tail in its mouth and roll after its prey in a gay and reckless manner, will pleise bring along a sample of fie Prohibition beverage they have been drinking, not necessarily for publication, but as an evi dence of good faith. We do not want to ask too many favors of this indulgent community, but we shall deem jYo. 42. it an especial kindness if o u friends who have a warm desire to blow in the gun their grand fathers carried ih the war of IS 12, to see if its loaded, will refrain from so doin until our day of publication, so that The Weekly G utter-Snipe and Poor Man's Plaster will not get the bulo-e on us in the matter of a starblingoccurrQirce "t)t. "pnllic- moment. Wo are not disposed to shut off the public from having a fair chance to spread themsehes through the medium of this paper, and if any m in thinks he can nmild a better gralcof pub lie opinion than we shall mould, and mould it faster than we can, we are willing any iress day to sit on tho inkkeg while he grasps the lever of the ban 1 -press and proceeds to mould it. Wo are happy to say to this intelligent" community that there is nothing sellish about us. The person win thinks he he knows how to run this paper better than we do, and is willing to dvo us a jreat deal of hi valuable time without compensa tion, will not be harshly dealt with; but the man with a glad smile and a bi watermelon will aiways be most welcome. With these few cr.ide remarks we shake loose the initial num ber of The Weekly Persimmon Pole, which isdesignel to reach into the innermost recesses of the pocketbooks of thisgencrous people, and extract from each a two-dollar bill per annum, in advance. A bill to be presented to con gress by the rated service pension association, will l c of a new and nowl nature. Jt makes - such sweeping chanps. however, that there is little probability of its being enacted into a lav. during this session at least. It provides for payment to all veterans of the late war who e vd in the army or navy subsequent to April 12, lSiJl, and prior to July 1, lStiii, a monthly pension equivalent to 1 cent a day for each day's service rendered. Uundor t Hi- bill a soldier who served but thirty d.ivs would receive thirty ei nts a month. A man who served a vear would n ceive $3.00 a mi.nth, and if he s rwd the full time be tween the d ites above m -ntioned, would receive about flDa month Olheers and enlisted men tare alike, and this in addition to any pension for disability, and to eon- ti me during the natural lives of benificiaries. All of these symptoms are in turn present. Jt is thought that nearly one-third of our popu lation has tbis disease in. some of its varied forms. It has been found that phy sicians have mistaken the cause of this disrase. Some have treated it lor a liver complaint, others for kidney disease, etc., etc., but none of these kinds of treatment have been attended with success; for it is really constipation and dyspepsia. It is also found that Shaker Ex tract of Roots, or Mother Sei gel's Curative Syrup, when properly prepared will remove this disease in all its stages. Care must bo taken, however, to secure the rrenuine article. IT WILL S2LL 15STTER THAN CuTTOX. Mr. John V. Ilemptinstall, of Ohulafinnce, Cleburn Co., Ala., writes: "My wife has been so much benefited by Shaker Ex tract of Hoots or SeigePs Syrup that she says she would rather e without part of her food than without the medicine. It has done her more good than the doctors and ail other medicines puttogether. I would ride twenty miles to get it into the hands of any suf ferer if he can et it in no other way. I believe it will soon sell in this State better than cotton. TESTIMONY FROM TEXAS. Mrs. S.E. Barton, of Varner, Ripley Co., Mo., writes that she had been long afflicted with dyspepsia and disease of the urinary organs and was cured by Shaker Extract of Roots. Rev. J. J. McGuire, merchant, of the same place, who sola Mrs. Barton the medicine, says he has sold it for four years and never knew it to fail. SHE WAS ALMOST DEAD I was so low with dyspep sia that there was not a phy sician to be found who could do anything with me. I had fluttering of the heart; and swimming of the head. One day I read your pamphlet called uife Among the Shakers," which described my disease better than I could myself. I tried the Shaker Extract of Roots and kept on with it until to-day I rejoice in good health. Mrs. M. E. Tinsley, Bevier, Muhlenburg Co.. Iy. For sale oy nil Imigists, or address the proprietor, A.
