KM Tie Brant L OMly Ms. Saturday - - - - "Way G, 18S2. Two weeks ago we printed the platform of the Oregon Democracy and to-dny tho Republican platform is given. We propose to treat both parties aiike. The wool clip of Orpgon this year will bo a million pounds more than it was 1 ist year. The quality of the staple is also bi-in improved each year by our wool growers. Smith and bloody, the candidates of the Democratic and the Republi can parties, respectively, for Gov ernor, have agreed not to stump the State nor employ any one else to do it for them. The Apaches are on their regular spring raid in ArizonM. Numbers of whites have been murdered alreadv. How long will the government con tinue to feed and fatten Indinns on reservations, that they may murder the frontier settlers? Some time since, Bennett, $tf$Ltfi$r lisher of tne New York HerjildfserJ... our the Jeannatte, ostcnsiblytoriiunt for the the north polp, but really to advertise his paper. The Jeannette not returning, the government pur - ' chased and manned the Rodgers and sent her to 'bunt for the -Jeannette. Now the Rjdgers has been destroyed and the Corwin has gone to resrue the crew. This is a good way to dis pose of old and worthless ships, but it occasions a fearful risk of life. The Hon. Geo. F. Hoar, of Mass. achusetts, wa-a leading opponent of the bill restricting Chinese immigra ition.. In the course of a lengthy speech which he made in the Senate on the subject, he quoted the fol lowing extract from a letter written by Joaquin Miller .to the New York Tribune: "These people were terribly taxed by the county authorities; but they always came up promptly, and with out a word of complaint paid what -was demanded of them. At Canvn City, Grant ounty, Oregon, this monthly tax was 85 a head for every Chinaman. They had constantly to endme wrongs from every drunken ruffian or leckless "hoodlum'' wlio saw fit to impose uj3on thorn; yet they were Ihe most peaceful people we h d among us. I sat on tho bench as judge of this county for four years, i;nd 1 will state on he 1. . jc . ii .ii i V. uuuoi.- (,i u magistrate mat tne calen dar bot- civil and or minal, showed the names of at least ten white men to one Chinaman, although the Chi nese population, during the most of this time, outnumbered the whites." Joaquin Miller should bo more particular to tell the truth upon "the Jionor of a magistrate' His letter, the greater part of which is not giv en, for lack of space, is untrue from first to last. It is of the same Iridiey ;as th3 mass of false statements by which the people of the East are misled in regard to the Chinese ques tion. Chinamen ware nevei requir ed to pay a monthly tax of 5 per bead at Canyon City. The foreign miner's tax was $5 per quarter. Chinunen are the most systematic and persistent evader- of taxpaying known to our officers. Owing to the fact that they dress alike and are of tho same general appearance, they frequently manage t jmake one poll tax receipt answer for half a dozen or more persons. The Chinese, population of this town or county never equalled, much less outnum bered the whites. That their names dc not appear upon the records of our courts as frequeutlv as do the whites, is true. The Chinese settle the ir private difficulties without re port to courts of law. The pistol ,i ihe knife settles their feuds more ef fectually than courts; while their crime are never known outside of their own company, except in rare instances. If the criminal is a mem Lcr of a rival aompany, or is without n onev and friends ho i H J w ill u As ft. j-. 1 I l .
