TIIE RESERVATION;
P.erhaijs the most of our readers
are amire ere this that the Malheur
Reservation will, in all probability,
bo thrown open for settlement early
next Spring, anil the lands sold; the
proceeds used for the future main
tuinance of ihe Indians.
The above is what our citizens have
prayed and hoped for for yoars past,
as tbe Reservation contains good
land eno'jgh, so we are told by Hr.
Wm. Hall and other cattle men, to
make, at least calculation, 100 good
a-ms, besido; plenty o; grazing
1 md i'T sLuek men. This will give
Gran-Conn: v a new start and ere
maiiv vc.m h.. will be s oken of a.
iha leading Couu.y oi E-utora Ore
gon, l'u is uovi jnpposed two, if not
three, railroads are to enter inside
her lines; oue through the Goose
Lake Country, the AViunemucca A"
Astoria road, and one through tin
Harney Aralley, and jierhaps, the
road that has been s rtyed down
Middle Fork may take a turn from
Baker City and go tl is route. So
our readers will see that the future
is altogether bright for the County.
The Reservation has been a draw
back to Grant County and deterred
hundreds from settling therein that
would have made good homes here
onlv thev feared the Indians. Now.
that that fear is dispelled the Mal
heur country, the Harney Valley
Loii" Creek and manv other beauti
nil and fertile valleys in our favored
(.'oaniy will rapidly settle up and
wnerd the Reservation brought $1
co our revenue the increase in popu
lation and wealth will bring more
than an hundred foldtothe business
of cha County. This County joins
Humboldt. Co., Nevada, and in that
County they have the Trans Conti
nental Railroad and, of course if the
other roads that are spoken of do go
through it will be only a few yeats
ere the valleys out South, that are
now used by a very few men forgraz
in x will be dotted over with farms as
people like to be as near a railroad
as possible and while they are sure
of the excellent market on the Pa-
cific Road at Wiuneimi'ica thev will
also be in close connection with the
new. road should it go through.
Just vihat will be done with the
immense and endless quantity of
supplies now at the Agency remains
to be discovered. But in our opin
ion, as wo have previously stated,
some one is going to make a fortune
out of them; of course it will not be
a "Western man, or men, but some
Eastern Jobber. AVe onlv wish that
the goods will be sold in lots so some
of our people that have had the curse
to 'ontend with for years can get a
show to make a few thousand out of
the "Red Boys." However, the
throwing open of the Reservation is
glory enough for one day.
OUU CilIUSTMAStflFTS,

then to Mrs. E. O. Magoon who con

O. Gentry furnishes a supply of har
ness and saddles, and then "Tony"
Hacheney fills the bill with Boots
Shoes, Clothing arid ir Goods,
then H. Heppner resets he shoes,
while the boys samples Wm. McDow
ell 's fine liquors and rolls the ivory
over the green. The mill is the last
place and a general supply of flour,
f ied, &c. are bargained for aid the
team is off for Prairie City where we'
will see something to tell all about
next week. In our gifts so far wo
have omitted no one either advertis
er or non-advertiser and if they don't
advertise it is not our fault. It is
our Christmas- gifts and we hope to
slight no one, and if they don't take a
notioa to advertise with the News
next year we will always think they
ought to.
