Shepherd, Enrroa 'Ofc-R YOUK l'AJL'ER. "When established the Nsvs 80 weeks 20 to-clav we did so -nutter evry discouragement that humau man could be treated to in the news paper business. Three other papers had been started in this county and 'every one went to the wall. -Sonic had even collected advance subscrip tion only one day before "they closed 'Tip. People were afraid to take hold with the News for fear of the same -treatment. AVtj were very poor, hed a family dependent on us; had to buy our paper, ink and other -material of the C. P. Co., on time, and other very embarrassing matters to contend with, vet with all '(ho -dis-couragement staring us in the .if ace we opened out and issued o-iir lirst lpaper., a little five column sheet, in wliidh We published a salutory, say ing that we had come Id stay, to make-ruoney and to advertise Grant bounty, with the intention of con YerEng our little paper into the larg est and best journal in Eastern Ore gon in less than five years. With that aim in view we did all the work -except rolling-for near two months, and by industry, economy and good customers we were able J&st August, tto pay off all we owed below, be sides many other bills "which we were compelled to make while in Baker City or starve. And as our subscrip tion list had increased so fast and our advertisements multiplied in pro portion we wess made to see that wo could not ruzi the News as small as it was arui -after doing the advertis ing business have any room for local news. So we concluded at once' to fulfill our five year-limited-promise. "We are not sorry for the enlarge ment, for our list has increased at tire rate of, on on average, 8 new names a week since the News came out as the largest paper East of the Cascades. We now feel almost con fident that the citizens send out each week a local paper from their comity that in the aggregate numbers many copies more than any paper in the "Bunch Grass Region " except three , and at the same rate of advance ment in our list, in less than three snonths they will be numbered with the passed ones. The County is rapidly settling up and the business in the County is increasing so that it is now time that we should have a job oilico in con nection with our paper. It is true we have a small job oince, bnt not sufficient to do as we should like to on job work, hence we are now try ing to put ourself in a position to put in a job press and more material so that no one need send off for work; can you help u?? Do not think we mean give. We will ex plain that some people suppose that if they, advertise once or twice in the start that the paper is then started and can live on wind. To all such we will say that that is a mistake as the three other papers speak too well of tho truth. Now we ask you to speak a good word for "your paper." I Get a subscriber when you can for it Advertise when it pays indirect ly if not directly and if you don't) advertise at all give the editor the privilege of buying sugar where he can do the best, and do not expect Iiim to puff you up when you accord to him no encouragement or patron--age. Don't put an advertisement in rind let it run SO weeks without mv aiKTii npnf lwwi-non if,f T.J short do all that von nossihlv r.-m for -your local paper and when vou ' do that you do something for your Countv and when von lioln n, County you help yourself and at the end you are the one that receives the pay for what yo.u.have done for the local paper.
