?i.7ii Tie Brit Coilf its. ONLY PAPKK IN 11 A XT COUNTY. Official Paper For Grant County. J 1 O-tnyon City, Saturday Oct. 2, ISSO. 8. H, Shepderd, EniTon A FALSEHOOD. The Dalles, Ogn.Sept. 22d, 1S80. Editor News: I would like to call the attention of your readers to the fact that certain citizens of your county have been doing all in their power to prevent the passing pf stock through the county, in transit east and west. The benefit of being on the highway of travel and the advan tages derived to the county from the presence of large quantities of valu able property for a more or less lengthened period are obvious to any intelligent person. As my profes sion is the moving, handling and manipulating live stock I would like to know if it is true as I have been told that one of your Justice's grant ed a warrant and your sheriff or dep uty arrested the owner of 7000 sheep for passing an invissable fence, and forced the strange gentleman to pay five hundred dollars for alleged tres pass or go to jail and loose more by abandoning his property altogether, and that another drover only sue ceeded in staving off similar -blackmail by the use of shot-gun persua sion. If such rumors are false I wish you would publicly contradict them , or if such practices are your social law the public might as well know it. Next spring large quantities of stock will be moved through your countv, and as some of those inter ested are seriously thinking of in vesting in , I would like to know if such preparation is necessary. The place where these alleged out rages have taken place is Cranes Prairie" or Flat. I am yours, DROYER. Could a more absurd story have been told our unsuspect ing stock drover ? Because the jury received the instructions 'it did from Judge Deady in re gard to our stock men you are not going to believe wg are a set or outlaws surely. We are happy to inform Mr. Drover that no such a case as lie men tions ever occuned in Grant County. The authorities have informed us that no drover has ever been molested for passing through this count-. It is a story or plainly speaking an other falsehood. FROM PRIXESYILLE. Pbinesville, Ogn. Sept. 28, 1SS0. Editor News: I have received the first copy of the new edition of the News and must say that I am more than pleased with it, in its new dress. The citizens of Grant Countv should feel proud to have such a paper in their midst and accord to it a most liberal support. The energy and perseverence exhibited in its general make up is commendable and shows that there is a live man at the head this time. Of the half dozen papers that I take none come more regular ly than the News. Have received every copy for fifteen months, and always on time. Having been a res ident of Canyon City for fifteen years I still feel a deep interest in its wellfare. Thera are several of the pioners of Grant County here. A. Breyman, "of the firm of Breyman and Somer ville, once owned the Gundlach corner- is still in the general merchan dise line, and has, I think, one of the most complete stock of goods in Ea'stern Oregpn. A. Lytle, who own ed the first blacksmith shop in the place, and was one of the first men to make the trip from Canyon to the Palles after gold was found cm the creek, has a ranch and is in the stock business, runs horses, cattle' and sheep. E. G. Conant, of Prai rie Diggings is here in the horse business and has as fine a band a can be found in the county. There are others of the old timers here and all doing well. And now, for fear of tireing your patience, I will close wishing you all success. Mc. By a local in another column it will be seen the John Day is to have another store. Wm. H. Clark has on the road from The Dalles a fine stock of goods, which he will place in the New Stone Building. ESTRAY NOTICE.
