For some time past the Walla Walla Statesman and the Town Talk, also published in that city, have been en gaged in the publication of pc sonal paragraphs which on Sunday evening culminated in a shooting affray. Ju.n before dusk Frank Parker, editor of the Statesman anil M. Harris, owner of the Town Talk, both of whom are well known in this city, met on Third street, Walla Walla, and engaged in a controversy, during which Harris drew a pistol and fired at Patke.r, the shot fortunately missed the aim and left the doughty Cdonel of Indian war fame unharmed. The altercation grew out of the publication in the Town Talk of an article reflecting on Mr. Paker. Both menwere piomptly arrested and taken to jail but were liberate! on giv ing the required bail. Yesterday morn ing Harris was triod on the charge nf assault and Lattery and was acquitted; Parker has made another complaint against Harris, charging him with as sault to kill, and the result is yet to be determined. THE COL'KSEOF ENLIGHTENMENT. The policy of this paper upon the much noticed Indian Question has always been that the Indian was but a bestial savage so that, as long as he is permitted to maintain his tribal relations, he will be in a state of be sotted ignorance and brutal stupid ity. Ttie following notice which wc glean from the Silver State, would go to show that such conclusions are often too hasty and readied without mature reflection: "1 hereby give notice that I have this day been abus ed by my squaw; that she has torn mv clothes and left me almost na ked in the streets, because she is jealous of me. She says I love an other squaw, but that is not true. I have never run after other squaws since I married her, and I don't want her to think so 'or treat'mo as she has done, because I am not a Mormon, and I'do'not' want more than one squaw and I have always been' true to her. Tow I am sure, from what I've seen, that there are Indians and white men who act as if thev were in love witi: her, and I know she encourages them, and-thafc she struck me and tore my clothes to make me think she loves me and docs not care for other Indians. Mv blood is hot, and I give notice that if any Indians or white men go fool ing around my squaw the had bet ter look out, as I will stand no more foolishness. This is the last notice I will give, and if any more Indians or whites come around mv squaw, the fun will commence. Winxemucca, Aug. 3, 1880. Piute Bob." It would seem that one cause of the trouble is a gentleman named Grasshopper Sam , who wears porcu pine quills in his ears during the heat ed term and fosters the growing in dustries of that mighty itate by playing six-card poker. He occu pies his leisure time in delivering lectures m human frailty and feeds his harem on watermelons and crick et soup. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next number of the Silver State which wc expect to con tain something like the following: Mv attention has been called to a newspaper card signed by one Piuie Bob, who, though he does not men tion me by name, makes such pri lil ted "references to allusions" that I am constrained to answer him, but I hardly know where to begin. I am sensible of having done him a voal wron. and I humble mvscif before birn as before my God. I ever wish that I were dead, for I am weary of sitting upon the ragged edge of de spair. I shall send him five thou sand bushels of acorns and am con fidently expecting from him a letter of grace, mercy and peace. Gn.ssiioppKii Sam. It is reported that Piute Bob tele graphed a retainer to Charles C'Con or to assist him in this case, but the o-vpjif mlvnpotn is ennffmr. -with hi? tiinti.nnnUt.in nvunHpn nil cova tliof x f- - one or Y) osiunorcecabOAuis q enoiiefil lor ilim. llie complaint covers nine pages of legal cap and charges infidelity in all its dips, an- gles and spurs. The world moves. These newly organized Counties do have lots of trouble about their Court-houses. Over in Spokan County, W. T., they have got it bad. The present location is Spokfin Falls, but some ambitious proierty-ownors at Depot Si)iings want it moved to their place.
