The citizens of the Southern part
of this County need a road to this
place, and as there is a movement on
foot inaugerated by some of our cit
izens to open the County road, late
ly surveyed from here to Ft Har
ney, it would be well for our people
to put their shoulders to the wheel
and aid the enterprise.
Frank McBean says he will give
$100, and a number of others say
they will give $25 toward the road.
It is thought that the merchants,
mechanics and business men of Can
yon City will see the value of such a
road and subscribe liberally toward
this much needed thoroughfare. The
present survey shortens the distance
from here to Bear Valley some three
miles and leaves the highest part of
the mountain on the old road.
Again, our sheep men, many of
them, who Summer range their sheep
in Bear Valley, and frequently pass
over the road with sheep and sup
plies can well afford to give largely
to the subscription list.
It should be borne in mind by our
citizens here, that the settlers in
Harney Valley buy all their supplies
in this town and valley and it is as
great & benefit to us to open the
road as it is for them to see it open
ed. In conversation with some of the
people from there, upon the subject
they expressed themselves as certain
that quite a sum of money could be
raised in thut section to aid the
county in opening the road. All aid
that can.be secured will be donated
to the County Court, provided they
will furnish the balance of the funds
to pay the lowest and best bidder to
build the road. This is a matter
tlaat the County Court should attend
to at once; and, as tho people need
the road and are willing to do all in
their power to get it, and as work
can be done on said road only in the
tatter part of the Summer, the quick
er the contract is let the better it
will be. "We are sorry to say that
Grant County is far behind every
other County in the matter of good
;ads, on account of spare settle
ments. Now, even Baker County
has built good roads all along her
line up to our border, and by so do
ing the citizens thereof are able to
supply our border settlers with
goods and produce cheaper than we
can. People living in our County
and having business in the County
Seat would frequently bring a wag
on and buy supplies and also bring
in their chickens, eggs, butter, ba
con &c, &c, if a good road was
built, but as long as they have to
come here on a pack mule just so
long are we the losers. It is time
our people were waking up, and we
hope the matter of the road will be
urged before the County Court at its
next session, that the necessary con
tract will be let and the road se
cured. CITIZEN.

CRIPPLED AND SUFFERING
ALONE.
Two weeks ago last Thursday, Mr.
John Farris, residing in tho basin
below the John Day Canon, was
thrown from his horse near his resi
dence, and being entangled in his
repe, was dragged some distance in
to a pile of rocks. He thera extri
cated himself and, finding his leg
broken, crawled, with much pain
and suffering, to his cabin, where he
remained alone, in a critical condi
tion for seven days;living merely up
on a little water and some dry bread.
At the end of the seventh day some
friends happening to pass his house,
stopped and found him thus suffer
ing alone and removed him, by
means of a boat, through the Canon,
and thence by team to the house of
Casey Officer, where he now is, and
doing as well as could be expected
under the circumstances, the neck
of the hip bone being broken.
John says his seven days' fast
wouldn't have amounted to anything
if he had only been assured that some
body would come to his assistance at
that time. He says he will chal
lenge Dr. Tanner for a forty days'
fast as soon as he can get his com
mittee of chosen friends to watch
him, and a bundle of straw for a
bed.
A Baby Team. Last Thurs
day we had a call from J, J.
Cozart, of Strawberry Yalley,
who was driving a pair of two-year-old
bay fillies, sired by
fiie dead hero, Champion Knox.
One of these was out of a Lind
say mare and the other from a
daughter of Rifleman; hence,
they wrere very well bred.
Both were over fifteen hands in
height and if ever Oregon pro
duces a Lady Horse it will be
the big bay filley which the old
man drove on the off side.

JOHN ZEPF, W. C. T.
F. P. HORSLEY, W. S.
A Man of Ability.
John Forrester was very correctly
namd, for, until a lew days ago, he
had spent his life in the woods. Sev
eral days ago he threw aside his maul,
came to the city, add now handles the
loratwhat lighter rock hummer. The
story of John's down fall shall be brief
ly related. Shortly after arriving in
the city he was attracted by a sign
bearing the inscription, 'Meals at All
Hours.' Entering the place and meet
ing the proprietor he said:
'You keep a tavern here, don't yeu V
'No. I keep a restaurant.'
'I don't know much about yeur new
names but you feed folks here, don't
you V
'Yes, sir.'
'Well, I want to board here three
days, or I reckon until I get a job of
some kind. T see your sign says 'nieaU
at all hour?.' You don't ratan that, do
you V
'Certainly, I mean it. I'll board you
three days for three dollar?.'
'And give me meals at ah hours V
'Ye, sir.'
'Here, take the three dollars. I nev
er set myself up as a regular boarder,
bat I'll buck against it for three days.
I think that I can stand her about that
long. It's eleven o'clock. Give me
something to eat.'
A meal was brought out and quickly
dispatched; and, remarking that he
would be ba( k on time, Mr. Forrester
left. At twelve o'clock he came back
and ate again. 'You needn't stare at
me he paid to one of the waiters.
You are a regular boarder, are
vou V
The regnlarest one you've got. I
don't intend to miss a meal. I've got a
chance now to git even for beiog hun
gry many a time.'
At one o'clock John came back and
remarked, as he hung up his hat: 'I'm
on time. It's one o'clock. Fetch sae
suthiu' to eat.' The waiter went away,
muttering and brought in rather a slim
meal.
Look a here,' said John, 'don't try to
go back on your contract. I reckon
you did rather underrate my ability,
but I'm a man.'
At two o'clock John came back and
took a seat. Th proprietor came iu
and asked him what he wanted.
'I waot my dinner, sapper or break
fast, just what you are a mind te call
if'
'Yon have already eaten here three
times to day.'
'I know that.'
'Why do you come again
jBecause it's two o'clock V
'It is not supper time.'
'I don't understand you, sir. What
do you mean V
The contract has been adhered to;
you have come irregularly.'
'No, sir. I've come regular. It was
the agreement that I was to have a
meal every hour, and I am going to
stand up to it if it packs ray stomach
as tight as a green water melon. You
are trying to impose on me because I'm
from the country. I have made ar
rangements with a boy to wake me up
every hour to-night, and I'm comin'
here to eat. That's my business now,
and I'll act fair with you and eat every
time. Give me an oyster can of coffee
and some ball sassige.'
The proprietor handed the man thri
dollars and requested him to leave. A
fight ensued, and John was led away by
the police. Wh n he completes his
rock pile engagement, he will sue the
restaurant for damages. Little Rock,
