Editor News: A letter has been
received by a gentleman of this place
from the immaculate Sarah, in which
she says that the Indians are not to re
turn to the Malheur Agency for some
time. The reason she assigns for
their not coming is that the Secreta
ry of the Interior has been appised
of the hostile attitude assumed by
the people of this country toward
the Piutes, and that under the pres
ent circumstances he deemed it ad
vipable that they should remain
"where they are, or words to that ef
fect If the Secretary of the Inte
rior wishes that the Piutes shall in
crease and multiply their species
and doubtless he does his action in
not sending them back here now
goes a long vray to prove that he has
a level head. Meanwhile improve
ments are going on at the Agency
on a large scale. Teams, heavily
laden with timber from French's
mill pass hore at frequent intervals
for that place, and freight teams are
on the road from "Winnemucca with
supplies for there. The average
.Harney citizen isn't worrying him
self much about the outcome of the
-presidential election, nor is he los
ing any sleep figuring out Dr. Tan
oner's chances of being able to stick
it out for forty days without grub.
'The question that agitates the Har
jiey .citizen at present is to get his lass
a-ope on the "oveana" and put his
brancLonii "Oveana" is the name
given "by stockmen to an orphan calf
that is not braitided, which there was
an unusually large number this sea
son, and, it is needless to say that
there were a great many who wanted
to adopt them.
Doctor Anderson, the genial host
of the Stein Mountain House, had a
ludicrous mishap befall him day be
fore yesterday. A party of emigrants
.en route to Montana, camped at his
place on that day, and they were so
delighted with the scenery and the
many kind attentions shown them by
the proprietor that they concluded
to lay over for a couple of days. One
of the party, a buxom widow of forty,
twitted the doctor on the LoneLy Life
he was Leading and pictured to him
the happiness that won !d ensue if he
onLj had a wif e and a young famiiy
growing up around him. She was
enthusiastic in her raise of the
choiee Location he had, saying, what
a perfect Paradise for a woman to
Live in ! The Doctor, thus encour
aged, invited the widow to ride out
with him to see his pLace, to which
she ready assented. The pair took a
seat in a Bain wagon behind "Tobe"
and "Chub," a spirited and favorite
team of his. After seeing everything
,of interest on the farm they were re
turning home, but Doc, who was
paying more attention to the fat wid
.ow than to the horses, dropped one
. of the Lines and the team started on a
idead run for home. Turning the
tcorner of a fence the wagon was up
set and the pair spiLLed on the grass,
but tortunateLy no one was injured
in the Least, The Doctor, however,
was in no humor for any more flirta
tion, and the wIiolo party, widow
xmd aLL, puLLed out next morning.

All through the country one meets
with tired, care-worn women who let m

are prepared for him, and after supper
he can enjoy his pipe in peace, his work,
over for the day. But with bis wife it
is different. Early in tho morning iho
rises to kindle the fira: dress the chil
dren, cook breakfast, wash the dishes,
send the children to school, get the din
ner. wash the dishes and if there is a
moment to spare between dinner and
supper, spend it in sewing get supper,
wash the dishes, put the children to
bed and if a tuoxtent more offers, tx
sew, besides taking care of the morning
and ev uing uiilk, churning and work-in"-
butter, And a hundred things that
must be done every day, in exactly tho
same way and order. She has no time
for pleasure. She does not attend any
lodge or society mooting; she visit a
neighbor but very seldom, "she's no
huyj" she dnes not walk out after tea
to meet a friend to drive away care by
social convtrse; her duties vex her till
bedtime, when anxious and careworn,

is no trick at all to get up a race
here for $300 a side for a 600 yarcl
