CANYON CITY LODGR, NO. 34, A. F. and A. M., holds its regular Cmmunications on the Saturday even inp of or next, preceeding the full moon in e.ick month, at seven and half o'clock P. M. ft OB All LODGE No. 22. IOO. F , in rets every Tmirsday evening xv th'ir L'dre Rum in 'anon C.vj. Visiting brothers are i vited to at'end. By Ord.-r of N. G. TUJ OUNTAINVIEW LODGE, No. ifl 33. I 0. 0. F., Prairie City, Ore gn, mets evrry Saturday Evening. Mp in hers of the order are invited to attend. By order of the N. G. Drowned. On last Monday even ing about half past five o'clock the citizens of this city were startled by the report that Alonzo Lockwood was drowning in the swimming hole below town. Many citizens were ' soon at the place and every effort I was made to hnd the boy, as lie had sunk to the bottom before aid could be called. It seems that Chas. Dus tin, a typo of this office, Geo. Cur rey, Jr., and Alonzo Lockwood had gone to the hole to take a swim. George did not go in the 'water, but Charlie and decease 1 did. They had hardly entered before, from some unknown cause, perhaps the ruptur ing of his lungs, as the water was very cold, Alonzo began to sink and had gone down before the other boys knew what was the matter, at which time George rode up to town for help and Charlie proceeded to aid his companion, and was taken down once with the drowning boy. When aid arrived he was no more. A num ber of the citizens made vigorous ei lorls to dire and find him, but until Geo. Gundlaoh rode up to his store and procured a grab hook and re turned, and by dragging the hole with it, was he found and brought to shore. Dr. Howard was on hand but after examination he was fully satisfied that life was totally extinct. H.'he bov was taken to the Masonic ! Hall and was there worked with, but, to no purpose. It was a sad affair as his father, deputy sheriff oi this county, was, and is yet lying very low, and the boy was only a few davs before summoned home to see his sick father. He was about 17 years old and was his Mother's pride and bis father's hope. Ho leaves a father, mother, three smaller broth ers and a sister, as well as many friends to mourn his untimely death. The bereaved family have the sym pathy of the whole county. THE GRANTO)UXTY SEWS Will enlarge on or about the 4th of Sept. and to enable us to tell jtifc how much to enlarge we hope aJi those persons that are doing busi ness in this county now, without ad vertising will take sufficient interest in the county to at least give the News a small adv. All we ask is a living; we. are willing to work for past glory, but must have enough patronage to sustain the paper, so if you want a large jmper come in im mediately with your ads. Small ones thankfully received and larger ones doubly so. Mb. R. C. Williamson, Superin tendent of the Overland Stage Com pany, informs us that daily mail ser vice has been ordered on the line be tween The Dalles and Canyon City, and between here and Baker City. He also says that a daily mail line will be established on the McBean line from here to Camp McDermitt, on the 1st of August. Rev. C. W. Shepherd filled Pres ident Weaver's appointment to speak at the Troy celebration, and a right good speech he made, too. There were about 1,500 people pres ent, and a very pleasant time was ei i j oy ed. Dem ocra t We have no objection to our brother filling Gen. Weaver's ap pointmont at a 4th of July celebra tion, but we should be disappointed to hear of his tilling an appointment for a political Greenback speech for the Presidential nominee. After August 1st, 18S0, persons can go irom i.no jjanes, via. uanyon City, to Winnemucea on a daily line of stages and, also from The Dalles, ; vh. this placa, to Kelton on the same lay out. Peoj)lo coming from the E-ist to the Columbia River should adopt either the route from Winnemucea or Kelton, via. Canvon City to The Dalles as the quickest, cheapest and most direct one. D. B.
