The Dramatic Ciub of this city, gave annthc-i of t!;eir pica, ing entertainments on last Thursday evening, and were greeted with u ;2 HO houe. It is surpiiiifig to see thfc progress- the members of the tn-uj-c are making. Exch and every puce wus gnne through with retnaikab'y well The little folks did ' Mother Goose's Party'' to perfection and al-o all of the songs they sang. "M-innge" was ve!l rendered and we c.mn t refiain from prai-ingMks Clara Sels and Mis Edith Hazi ltiue for their acting in this p'ee they certainly have great l!r.nn.itic talent. Mis Ca:tinac!i and Miss iLi zehine are "well up" as vocalist?. "My fi-st music Issm" by Mi M. iiazekiue, was perfection and elicited :reat applause from the audience. "The Virginian Muium" was ex tremely well played and afforded much iwniment for both old and vouiij:. Eddie S-.h, as ''(linger Blue," Was good for a boy of his ace and about all he needs is a lift In practice on the negro motions ar il dialect t-i ti.ake him huc. "Jean' Bracketr, as ''Paddy' was im j)y irntneme. The other character- bv Phi'. Poindexter, 'Join 1 Vind-.ter, Mss Cattnnaeh and Freddie Korsley were well taken. The proceeds will be given to the John Diy School. Th.y give .-.n-uhtr p. rformance next Tnurd.-ty night f r the benefit of the school house in t his city. The Conn any have sent for n:w .scenery, books, etc., and Canyon City will son be greeted with a p-.'iforma' ce that older troupes may be envious of. Last Su day we accepted the very kind invitition Mr. D. B. Rineha.t, to get into his buggy aud take u ride out to see their orchard which was in full bloom. After stopping at John Day fur "Mother Fiskv aud Miss Dora we pro ceeded on our way to the Fruit Ranch. There we wero greeted by Mr. David Fisk and his good lady. Leaving our family to enjoy the hospitalities of the family, we, in company with :Mr. llinc hart and our.con, took astroll over the or chard, through the apple, cider and vin. egar cellars, and after one goes through the cellars and sees the apples and ci. ' der vinegars therein he cannot but coincide with us that the Fruit Ranch of D. B. Rinchart and the Fisk estate is a great enterprise for Grant Coun ty. After a sumptous med we took a a ride around and through the orchard and, indeed it was a grand treat to see the trees white with blossom?, and if the half remain on to make fruit the sight will be wonderful. We will put the above orchaid against any other for cleanliness, evennessand usefulness Our ride home was not.-o pleasant as out' owing to a hijih wind storm. Died. Editor News: flarney maidens are disconsolate at the idea of the "boy? in blue" going away, but one would suppose the boys were not going to re main long away from the fact that the gushing maidens be heard at all lmurs of the day- humming, "He is coming back to me, Baby Mine." One of Tour John Day girls made a $40,000 "mash" over here, without the slightest effort on her pait here, and it is saddening to think that the gifted "Marv Ann' fools away her time at ".-hiii-digs" down the river instead of taking the disinterested advice to come to Harnev. Col. Mason has b,en busi'y engased sinca he came hrtrc inspecting govern ment property, with a view of having it ready for the sale which is to come off on the 10th inst. The i Col. is also making arrangements to hurry the troops off at the MiorUrt pos sible notice, lest sonic ill wind might blow that would render it absolutely necessary that they should teniain here. The result of the big race that came off Ik re on Satin day was a great sur prise to everybody, and especially to the i backers of Mr. Devioc's hor.se Stormv, who thought, that it was just like pick ing mot:ev up on the road to net a bet on hi.u taken. The r.ice was a single dash of half a niiic open to horses owned in Hart oy valley, S200 each with SI 00 added. The entries were De vine's Stormy, Oliver's Pill Box. and Shepherd's i'op corn. Stormy, to a good start, went promptly ti the front, aud maintain' d hi- load for the first GOO yards, when he was overtaKcn ty rill 1 5;x wno ctine away at a strong, steady, racehorse lick, winning by nearly two 1- nhs. A. Baisely vs. H. H.Hayes et.als. It is said to have been the most hotly and closely contested case ever hied in Eastern Oregon. The contest was for the ownership of the recent ly discovered quartz ledge near Poca hontas, about 10 miles west of Baker I City. It promises to be the most J important and prolific discovery ev j er made in Eastern Oregon.
